What motivated you to pursue bariatric surgery?

I’ve been managing a list of autoimmune diseases and struggling with severe joint pain, particularly in my legs. My rheumatologist recommended exploring bariatric surgery as an option to improve my health. Additionally, my endocrinologist diagnosed me with insulin resistance and warned me that if I continued down this path, I would likely develop diabetes. I didn’t want to add that to my long list of health challenges.

How were your health challenges affecting your daily life?

Living with autoimmune conditions is challenging on its own, but the extra weight made everything so much harder. Simple tasks like walking became a struggle; I could only walk for a few minutes before my extremities would swell, and the pain was unbearable. Everyday activities felt overwhelming, and the constant discomfort drained my energy. It had gotten to a point where I avoided going out altogether because I knew how stressful and exhausting it would be for my body. My weight wasn’t just affecting my health, it was taking a toll on my quality of life.

What is your life like after surgery, and how has it affected your other health challenges?

This surgery truly saved my life, my relationships and most importantly, myself. It gave me my life back in ways I couldn’t have imagined. Losing weight has significantly relieved my joint pain, allowing me to move freely and without constant discomfort. Simple joys like walking, going out and spending quality time with loved ones are no longer overwhelming or painful. My endocrinologist even congratulated me, telling me I’ve pushed diabetes far, far away. I can now live a fuller, healthier life and do things I once thought impossible.

How are you experiencing life in a new way after your bariatric surgery?

Life after surgery has been nothing short of transformative. It’s not just about weight loss; it’s about gaining freedom, confidence and a renewed sense of purpose. The constant joint pain and exhaustion are gone, and I feel like a completely different person. One of the biggest joys has been rediscovering my love for Zumba. I can dance, move and truly enjoy myself without the physical limitations that once held me back. This surgery didn’t just change my health; it changed my mindset and opened the door to a vibrant, active life I never thought I’d have again.

What are you looking forward to doing with your family post-surgery?

I’m incredibly excited about returning to Europe with my family after surgery. The last time we visited, the excess weight made it so difficult I could barely walk without pain, and it held me back from fully enjoying the experience. With my weight gone and my health transformed, I’m looking forward to exploring freely, walking through beautiful streets, climbing stairs to historic landmarks and experiencing everything without limitations.

Beyond traveling, I’m excited to participate in more family activities, like bike rides, long walks and even simple things like playing at the park with my kids without feeling exhausted. I can’t wait to go on outdoor adventures, like hiking or visiting theme parks, knowing I’ll have the energy and stamina to keep up. Even at home, I’m looking forward to being more present by dancing in the living room, cooking together and enjoying life without constant aches and struggles. This surgery didn’t just change my body; it gave me the freedom to be the active, engaged and joyful version of myself that my family deserves.

How was your experience with the AdventHealth Bariatric and Metabolic Institute?

My experience with AdventHealth was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment I walked through their doors, I felt seen, cared for and supported in ways I never expected. The staff’s professionalism and compassion were unmatched. They didn’t just treat me as a patient but as a person. Every nurse, doctor and team member went above and beyond to ensure I was comfortable and informed every step of the way. The facilities were immaculate and equipped with leading-edge technology, and the attention to detail in my care was remarkable.

Dr. Thatimatla and the surgical team were phenomenal. They explained everything thoroughly, ensuring I felt confident and at ease about my procedure. The post-operation care was equally impressive. They truly prioritized my recovery and set me up for success. They gave me more than a successful surgery — they gave me a new lease on life.
