Urgent Care or ER: How to Identify an Emergency
Signs of a medical emergency can be sudden or gradual. You may experience intense pain or difficulty breathing; you may notice your loved one choking or clutching their chest. Other times, the signs can be more straightforward: a broken arm, a severe burn, or a deep wound.
When you recognize symptoms of a medical emergency in yourself or someone else, trust your instincts. Err on the side of caution, and call 911 immediately to head to the nearest emergency room. The emergency room at AdventHealth DeLand, formerly Florida Hospital DeLand, can treat a wide range of conditions, including:- Deep Wounds
- Difficulty Breathing
- Fractures
- Head Injury
- Poisoning
- Severe Allergic Reactions
- Severe Burns
- Suspected Heart Attack
- Suspected Stroke
- Vomiting or Coughing Up Blood
As an emergency room recognized for our high level of care in treating chest pain and stroke, we’re well-equipped to help bring you relief from stroke, heart attack, and similar conditions. And with results that rank in the top five percent nationwide, you can trust us with your medical emergency.
What to Expect When You Visit Our DeLand ER
We know you’ve been caught off guard, that you weren’t expecting this turn of events. That’s why our hospital ER team will take the time to answer each and every question you have about what’s happening right now. Knowledge is power, and we want you to be well-informed about your care. We’ll have a few questions for you, too. To help us give better, safer care, we’ll ask for basic things like your medical history and the reason for your visit. A nurse will take your vital signs, and then we’ll decide on the best way to help you find healing.
Because an emergency can happen at any time, you may want to consider always keeping an information card in your wallet or purse. Include things like the name and number of your primary care doctor, a list of your medications and drug allergies, and advance directives like power of attorney or health care proxy. Knowing this information makes it easier for us to care for you in an emergency.
We want to provide you with the best care possible. In our DeLand ER, we use a process known as triage to prioritize which patients receive care first. That means a patient suffering from stroke may receive care before another patient not in a critical condition, even if that patient arrived earlier. No matter what, we always strive to reduce your emergency room wait time as much as possible. You can trust we have your best interests at heart, and that we’ll do all we can to provide you with fast, effective care.
