- Different Phases to Target Your Needs
-
Inpatient Education (Phase I)
All inpatients in our hospital with symptoms of heart or lung disease receive a visit from our staff prior to discharge. The educational visit includes topics such as risk factor modification, smoking cessation, medications, diagnostic and treatment procedures. Our goal is to introduce each patient to cardiopulmonary rehabilitation before they leave the hospital.
Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Programs (Phases II)
Our comprehensive Outpatient Phase II Cardiac Rehabilitation Program is open to all patients with cardiac disease. However, a physician’s referral is required for this program. Common diagnoses reimbursed by most insurance companies include coronary artery bypass grafts, heart attacks, PTCA/Stent and valve repair or replacement and stable angina. Our goal for the recovering cardiac patient is to assist in increasing their quality of life by improving exercise tolerance and providing weekly educational seminars.
Our comprehensive Outpatient Phase II Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is designed to meet each participant’s respiratory rehabilitation needs.
However, a physician’s referral is required for this program. Common diagnoses reimbursed by insurance companies include emphysema, chronic bronchitis, asthma and pulmonary fibrosis.
In both programs, our staff closely monitors exercise heart rate, electrocardiogram interpretation, oxygen saturation and blood pressure. Exercise includes walking on a treadmill, riding a stationary bicycle, stretching and when possible, use of our full line of Nautilus resistance equipment and hand weights.
Weekly educational classes include dietary concerns, label reading, cholesterol, anatomy and physiology of the heart/lung, diabetes management, exercise prescription, risk factors and goal setting, medications, controlling stress, bronchial hygiene and more. These classes are open to the public and are not limited to patients in the program. The Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program you choose should be certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation(AACVPR). Our program is one of the few in Florida with this certification.
Maintenance Exercise (Phase III)
Our phase III program is designed for patients that have graduated from our phase II program, however, patients with diabetes also qualify for phase III exercise. It is important to continue with healthy lifestyle habits learned in phase II, as wellness benefits incurred need to be maintained. There is a nominal fee from the Phase II program similar to what you would pay to exercise at a gym. Registration for this program is on a monthly basis so year-round residency is not required.
In this program, your heart rate, blood pressure, ECG rhythm and sugar levels can be checked with each visit. Following your initial orientation, you will receive an exercise prescription that is unique to your needs. Our professional staff will supervise your cardiovascular, resistance and stretching exercises to ensure proper technique. In addition, each week you will have the option of attending support groups on weight loss and other topics learned in phase II. Surveys have shown that we all exercise more consistently and effectively when we do it together.
