According to Meagan Salls, her life before weight loss surgery was miserable. “I didn't enjoy my life. I had multiple health issues because I was obese. I never wanted to do anything because I knew I would get tired fast. I was always home and never wanted to leave the house,” she says.

With bariatric surgery, Meagan not only transformed her body — she’s a whole new person inside and out with more energy and a brighter outlook on life.

Learn about Meagan’s inspiring weight loss journey in her own words and pictures below. It’s obvious that she’s glowing with joy.

Who was your bariatric surgeon?

My bariatric surgeon was Shiva Seetahal, MD, FASMBS at AdventHealth Medical Group Weight Loss and Bariatric surgery at Davenport. Dr. Seetahal is amazing. I recommend him to anyone considering weight loss surgery.

Which bariatric procedure did you have and when?

I had a gastric sleeve procedure done on July 1, 2021.

How much weight have you lost?

I’ve lost about 160 pounds since my surgery.

What was your “Why” behind having bariatric surgery?

I wanted to start living again. Before my weight loss surgery, I was homebound. I was too embarrassed to do things I love, like going to theme parks and fairs, because I knew I wouldn’t fit on some rides. It was the same with airplanes. I never traveled because I was too embarrassed to fly knowing I’d take up two seats.

Now, I’ve learned that I truly do love life. Before, I didn’t. I love traveling and trying new things. I have no excuse now for anything to stop me. I’m free.

What’s one thing you wish you would have known before having bariatric surgery?

Some people get bariatric surgery expecting it to be a big physical change, but it’s not just the physical change that happens. It’s a whole mental shift, too, one that you need to prepare for leading up to your surgery so you’re not shocked by it.

How have your friends and family reacted to your transformation?

Everyone in my life has been so positive about it. They all know I struggled with my weight for pretty much my entire life. They were so happy when I finally made my health my top priority.

What’s your advice for those considering weight loss surgery?

First, make sure you’re having this surgery for you. Don’t let anyone pressure you into it if you’re not ready.

Secondly, this surgery won’t show instant results. It takes time and effort on your part.

Be patient. Also, trust your surgeon and reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Most importantly, think of this surgery as a tool, and use it wisely. It takes work and commitment to keep the weight off. Remember to eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly. You’ll be glad you did when you start seeing the results!
