For generations, incontinence was something that “just happened” as you got older, but thanks to recent advances in therapy and treatments – and a better understanding of the causes of urinary incontinence, there’s no need to suffer in silence any more.
One effective way to help manage the symptoms of incontinence and gain better control over your bladder and its muscles is with pelvic floor therapy and urinary incontinence rehab.
At AdventHealth Heart of Florida, our compassionate and understanding physical therapists will work with you to help you gain control – all in a supportive and empowering environment.
We start by working to understand the cause of your urinary incontinence. Your physical therapist can also refer you to a physician if you need additional test or treatment.
Once we better understand the source of your symptoms, we’ll create a treatment plan that’s right for you. Your physical therapy will focus on strengthening your pelvic floor muscles that control the bladder and improving their function.
This targeted approach can help you gain control over your symptoms and reduce the need for pads, special undergarments, medication and possibly even surgery. Your physical therapist will also help educate you on ways your lifestyle can impact your bladder health, such as:
- Behaviors that can help alleviate symptoms
- Food and drink that can irritate the bladder

Getting moving shortly after surgery can be uncomfortable but beginning physical therapy just a few hours after recovery can help you heal faster and reduce your pain. A physical therapist will work with you each day in the hospital to help you get out of bed and use any necessary medical equipment, such as a cane or walker.
At AdventHealth Heart of Florida, physical therapy will also continue after your discharge from the hospital as outpatient rehab. You may work with your physical therapist once a week to continue your strengthening exercises. Your therapist will also ask you to practice at-home exercises. Be sure to follow any direction from your physical therapist and surgeon to help you stay safe on your road to recovery.
