Mar. 30, 2022; HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. – AdventHealth Hendersonville is excited to introduce you to our new recipient of our Sunshine Award. Doug Walrath is a member of our Engineering and Security Departments. He is known for his compassionate spirit as he meets the needs our team members all around our hospital.

AdventHealth team members explain Doug has a servant’s heart and lives out AdventHealth’s service standards with every person – whether a patient, visitor or team member.

Doug is an incredible example of what it means to live out a calling to care.

One day as he was fulfilling his role of supporting our security team, Doug was called help with a family member of a patient. At first it appeared this person just didn’t want to comply with current CDC guidelines for safety. Doug stepped in to help with the situation.

His nominator shares, “Doug not only compassionately de-escalated the situation but also took the time to understand the person’s frustrations.” Doug took the time to listen to this person. He learned that along with the stress of a loved one being in the hospital, this person had lost a son and grandson in the space of six months.

This same uncommon compassion plays out when Doug is meeting the engineering needs of our teams. He worked to find ways to keep our care teams working at the COVID-19 Drive-thru Test site warm in the winter and cool in the summer. “Doug was always there... doing as much as possible to make us comfortable with a smile on his face and an encouraging word.”

For owning the opportunities to help our patients and their families feel loved and our team feel safe, Doug Walrath is being honored with the Sunshine Award.

AdventHealth Nursing Leadership created the Sunshine Award to recognize ancillary team members who strive for excellence in their profession, consistently deliver exceptional care, uphold the highest standards and collaborate with the AdventHealth nursing teams to enhance the experience of our patients, family members and guests while Extending the Healing Ministry of Christ.

AdventHealth ancillary departments include respiratory services, imaging, laboratory services, nutritional services, engineering, security and bio-med.
