N.C., AdventHealth Hendersonville Deploys UVC Disinfection Robot to Fight Infections

Tru-D® SmartUVC kills germs with cutting-edge technology

May 21, 2020; HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. – AdventHealth Hendersonville recently added Tru-D® SmartUVC, a germ-eliminating UVC disinfection robot, to its already extensive list of disinfection protocols to protect patients from serious hospital-acquired infections (HAIs).

Tru-D® is the latest way AdventHealth is raising the bar when it comes to the level of care it provides to all patients.

“Adding the Tru-D robots means we are increasing our quality of care and decreasing the risk for infections here at AdventHealth,” said Kelli Stike, MSN, RN; AdventHealth Hendersonville Surgery Services Director. “This is an added layer to the process that we already follow to make sure we are operating in a safe environment for our patients.”

AdventHealth has two Tru-D® robots. It has the capability to use them in its operating rooms, patient rooms and other areas that require disinfection.

The robots are also a key tool for the COVID-19 Pandemic response. While AdventHealth has an adequate supply of PPE, should that change the Tru-D® robots are able to disinfect PPE such as the N95 masks.

“While our dedication to safety has earned us national recognition from the Leapfrog Group and other quality rating organizations, our care teams are committed to continually finding ways to take safety to the next level. Implementing these UVC disinfection robots allows us to do just that,” said Cory Reeves, AdventHealth Hendersonville President and CEO.

Tru-D®, which works by generating UVC light energy that modifies the DNA or RNA structure of an infectious cell, is the only portable UVC disinfection system on the market with patented Sensor360® technology. The device’s sensors calculate the amount of UVC energy needed to disinfect an entire room while compensating for room variables such as size, shape, surface reflectivity and contents to then deliver one, lethal dose from one location in the room, effectively eliminating lingering pathogens in the space. This technology, coupled with Tru-D’s high-efficiency germicidal lamps, kills deadly germs such as methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) and VRE.

“Hospitals that provide an extra level of care by disinfecting rooms with Tru-D® are taking a proactive step in ensuring patients and staff have a clean and germ-free environment,” said Chuck Dunn, President of Tru-D® SmartUVC. “It takes the guesswork out of previous protocols and ensures confidence in clinicians and patients alike.”

The CDC-funded Benefits of Enhanced Terminal Room Disinfection study showed that enhanced terminal room disinfection strategies using Tru-D® decreased the relative risk of colonization and infection of target MDROs among patients admitted to the same room by a cumulative 30% in a hospital setting with 93% compliance of standard disinfection protocols. Individual hospital results may vary. It takes the guesswork out of previous protocols and ensures confidence in clinicians and patients alike.

After a hospital staff member cleans the room using traditional cleaning protocols, Tru-D® is rolled in to complete the disinfection process. The robot is operated by a remote control outside the room and features an application that tracks infection control data while simultaneously uploading the information to the hospital’s web portal. Set up is quick and easy and does not require input of room measurements or covering of windows and vents. The robot can disinfect a room from one position, eliminating the need to move it to multiple places in the room. Once disinfection is complete, Tru-D® notifies the operator via audio and/or text message that the process has finished, and Tru-D can be moved to the next room.
