N.C., — AdventHealth Hendersonville Earns Recertification as
Spine Surgery Center of Excellence
June 2, 2020; HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. – AdventHealth Hendersonville has once again earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for the Spine Surgery Center of Excellence Certification. The Gold Seal of Approval® is a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to providing safe and effective patient care.
AdventHealth underwent a rigorous on-site review for recertification of its designation, which it initially earned in 2017. Joint Commission experts evaluated compliance with national disease-specific care standards as well as with spinal surgery-specific requirements. They also assessed clinical practice guidelines and performance measures.
Established in 2002 and awarded for a two-year period, The Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Care Certification evaluates clinical programs across the continuum of care and addresses three core areas:
- Compliance with consensus-based national standards.
- Effective use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care.
- An organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities.
"Spinal Surgery Certification recognizes health care organizations committed to fostering continuous quality improvement in patient safety and quality of care,” says Mark Pelletier, RN, MS, Chief Operating Officer of Accreditation and Certification Operations and Chief Nursing Executive for The Joint Commission. “We commend AdventHealth Hendersonville for using certification to reduce variation in its clinical processes and to strengthen its program structure and management framework for orthopedic patients.”
"The recertification of our Spine Surgery Center of Excellence is a testament to our expansion of cutting-edge techniques and innovation, adherence to evidence-based medicine and our commitment to putting the patient first,” said Stephen M. David, MD, Medical Director of the Orthopedic Program and Total Spine Center at AdventHealth Hendersonville.
"We congratulate our AdventHealth Surgical Services team for their constant dedication to excellence in care of our patients, which has once again earned this distinction from the premier health care quality improvement accrediting body in the nation,” said Cory Reeves, AdventHealth Hendersonville President and CEO. “The Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval® allows patients to know we will provide them with safe, quality orthopedic care.”
In 2019, AdventHealth Hendersonville’s Spine Surgery Center completed its 100th surgery using the Mazor X™ Robotic Guidance Platform, which allows for precision placement of spinal implants.
AdventHealth Hendersonville leads the way in firsts for spine surgery in Western North Carolina, including the use of nanomedicine in the operating room. The nanoLOCKTM spine implant uses nanotechnology and a process called biomimicry to facilitate natural healing across the implant. Spine surgery patients at AdventHealth Hendersonville can also benefit from the use of the MisonixTM Ultrasonic Spinal Surgery technology, which is safer than existing techniques for spinal nerve decompression, and the Pro-Axis Spinal Surgical table, which allows for safer and more precise positioning of the spine during a surgical procedure.
