N.C., — AdventHealth Hendersonville Welcomes Family Medicine Physician
Specializing in Geriatrics
July 21, 2020; HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. – AdventHealth Hendersonville is excited to announce the addition of Marianna Benson, DO, to its team of providers. Dr. Benson will offer primary care with a focus on geriatrics at AdventHealth Medical Group Multispecialty at Laurel Park*, conveniently located just off Highway 64 near Downtown Hendersonville.
Dr. Benson is board-certified in family medicine and fellowship-trained in geriatrics. She completed her fellowship in geriatrics at Carolinas Healthcare System Blue Ridge in Morganton, N.C., and her residency in family medicine at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Va., and attended medical school at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, Va. Dr. Benson says her passion in caring for older adults began when she was in medical school.
“The field of geriatrics has taught me to listen to my patients and be humbled by their trust,” Dr. Benson says. “I feel there is wisdom with aging, and I believe in providing quality care for our vulnerable elderly, whether it be in clinic, the hospital, patients’ homes, or in nursing facilities.”
Dr. Benson says her goals as a clinician include reducing hospital readmissions, discussing personal goals of care with patients before reaching end of life, and finding innovative ways to improve safety and quality of life for older adults.
“I am also rewarded by helping families understand and plan for loved ones with dementia,” Dr. Benson explains.
AdventHealth Medical Group Multispecialty at Laurel Park is a hub for age-friendly care, offering specialized services for older adults and their caregivers including a multidisciplinary team of medical providers, physical therapy, pharmacy, nutrition, dementia support groups and pet therapy to ensure patients don’t have to travel far to receive comprehensive and wholistic care.
Dr. Benson adds that she is excited to be part of this team and AdventHealth Hendersonville’s participation in the Age-Friendly Health Systems initiative.
“I believe in the multidisciplinary approach to care,” Dr. Benson says. “I recognize that I cannot do my job well without the help of nurses, social workers, pharmacists, therapists, and all other aspects of the care team.”
Dr. Benson lives in Asheville with her husband, Jonathan, and their cat, Tsunami. In her free time, she enjoys painting, music, reading, travel, movies, yoga and cooking healthy foods. One of her life goals is to visit all of the U.S. National Parks.
