Free Radon Testing for 100 Homeowners in Buncombe and Henderson Counties

January 18, 2019 — During the month of January, funding from the AdventHealth Hendersonville Cancer Services Community Screening Grant will allow 100 Homeowners in Buncombe and Henderson Counties to receive a FREE in-home radon test kit. This free program is a key step in helping people track the presence of radon, which is the number one cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.

Radon is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that comes from the earth and enters our buildings. Radon is prevalent year-round; however, radon levels tend to be higher during colder months. Radon test kits normally sell for $8 - 10 each and are a simple, effective way to test for the presence of radon in the home.

The importance of testing is driven home when we consider that Buncombe and Polk County are both located in a red zone or ZONE 1 which is most likely to have the presence of radon according to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) data. Zone 1 counties are defined as having the highest potential for presence of radon with an average predicted indoor screening level greater than 4 pCi/L (pico curies per liter).

"Because there are no obvious indicators of the presence of radon, we want people in our communities to make sure they are taking time to test for the cancer-causing gas. The only way to know if your home has radon is to test.”
