Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) is a gentle, hands-on modality that addresses structural restrictions in the tissues and articulations of the body. It involves a wide range of techniques that aim to restore optimal motion and function.
OMM can be used in conjunction with other standard treatments to address painful musculoskeletal conditions that may be the result of degenerative changes, prior trauma, or postural imbalance. The goal of OMM is to address restrictions in the tissues, restore physiologic motion and balance, unwind and release traumatic patterns, and restore optimal function. Additional benefits include pain relief, relaxation, and improvement in overall health.
Some common conditions that may benefit from osteopathic manipulation include the following:
• Headaches
• Neck pain
• Mid and lower back pain
• Rib pain
• Peripheral joint pain
• TMJ
• Pelvic pain
• Sports-related injuries
• Whiplash injury
• Overuse syndromes (CTS)
• Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ)
• Head trauma/Concussion
• Chronic sinusitis
• Chronic ear infections
• GERD
• OMM may be beneficial in a multitude of gastrointestinal, genitourinary, respiratory, and neurologic conditions in combination with traditional interventions
