Maternity Care That Goes Beyond
Newborns affect their mother’s body, mind and spirit, even before conception. An infant’s arrival also leaves a lasting impact on fathers, siblings and other family members. That’s why we’re developing a robust childbirth program with tools and resources to make your childbearing experience safer, more comfortable and more meaningful.
From family planning and prenatal care to delivery and postpartum support, you can count on our resources to support every aspect of your journey.
- Education Classes and Support Groups
-
Although there’s no single guidebook on how to prepare for childbirth and beyond, we can provide specialized prenatal support and counseling in a variety of ways.
Our teams have designed classes based on years of clinical excellence and experience with all kinds of pregnancies and deliveries, so we can educate expectant mothers and their families and help them feel more comfortable. We also encourage mothers and families to participate in support groups led by experts.
Prepare for your special day with educational classes and support groups* on topics such as:
- Breastfeeding*
- Birthing
- CPR for infants and children

- Family-Centered Care
-
Welcoming a baby into the world is an extraordinary occasion for the entire family. Newborns arrive day and night, and our teams work to ensure families meet their new family member as soon as the mother and baby are strong enough to greet their supporters.
On some occasions, newborns require immediate medical attention that can make life after birth difficult for family members. Our teams take great care to provide support to parents of newborns admitted to the NICU, which includes counseling and a screening for depression (including for new fathers).
- Breastfeeding Clinic
-
While breastfeeding is a healthy way to help mothers bond with their infants, it doesn’t always come naturally. Our lactation consultants and nurses can assist with breastfeeding during your hospital stay. A lactation consultant can provide guidance for mothers just learning to breastfeed, as well as moms who struggle with breastfeeding after leaving the hospital. Contact Call913-373-6166 with breastfeeding and lactation questions.
- Personalized Care Plan
-
Every mother’s needs are unique. That’s why we’ll help you choose your labor and delivery team and listen closely to your hopes for delivery day. From deliveries with medical intervention and C-sections to all-natural birthing experiences, we’ll work with you to create a plan that feels just right for you — physically, mentally and spiritually.
- Perinatal Bereavement Program
-
There are no words or programs that can fill the emptiness left by miscarriage or the passing of your little one. But there are medical experts who are skilled in understanding grief and brimming with compassion to help families mourn this tremendous loss. Our Perinatal Bereavement Program will be an essential part of our Birth Center, lending all the support each family needs to weather this challenging time.
- Visitation Guide
-
Thank you for choosing AdventHealth for your birthing experience. We know how important family is during this time and want to give you guidance on what to expect for visitors.

About Our Level II NICU
Our Birth Center will be staffed by physicians, nurses and other medical professionals — all working together to ensure that every baby is born safely.
When extra medical care is needed, we’re ready with a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) on-site, staffed with compassionate Children’s Mercy providers. This special neonatal care for sick and premature infants (33 weeks or older) is designed to provide additional support for premature babies.
In some cases, more intensive care is needed. Our team may recommend moving a newborn to our AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Level III NICU, which is equipped and staffed to treat newborns who have more advanced illnesses or genetic disorders.
