- Lymphedema Therapy
-
Lymphedema Therapy is a service provided by the physical therapy department at Inspiration Place. The therapists working with lymphedema patients have received specialized training and are certified in lymphedema management.
What is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is a condition of excessive fluid accumulation in the body’s tissues, generally as a result of an injury or mechanical disruption of the lymphatic system.
The lymphatic system is comprised of vessels and lymph nodes that travel throughout the body, like the circulatory system of veins and arteries. The two main purposes of the lymphatic system are:- Carry fluid from the body’s extra-cellular tissues, ultimately returning it to the circulatory system.
- Works with the immune system, filtering out bacteria and toxins.
- If the lymphatic system is compromised, protein-rich fluid accumulates in a region of the body, such as an arm, leg or in the trunk. This swelling can cause symptoms of pain, sense of heaviness, weakness, numbness and tingling, skin integrity changes, and can lead to cellulitis (infection).
What are the Causes of Lymphedema?
- Surgery: Any surgeries which involve removal of lymph nodes or vessels. Breast cancer surgeries are most commonly associated with lymphedema of the upper extremities. Abdominal and pelvic surgeries can also result in lower extremity lymphedema.
- Radiation: Radiation treatment can result in scarring and damage to lymph vessels and nodes.
- Chronic Venous Insufficiency: CVI of the lower extremities can overload the lymphatic system and eventually result in lymphedema.
- Primary Lymphedema: Congenital malformations of the lymphatic system can occur. Although an individual is born with a malfunctioning system, the symptoms of lymphedema may not occur until later in life.
- Trauma: Any trauma leading to lymphatic system injury may result in lymphedema.
What is Lymphedema Therapy:
- Lymphedema therapy is a multi-faceted program, involving a personalized treatment plan for each patient. It is called Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) and involves:
- Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) - specialized massage technique that is designed to remove lymphatic fluid from a region of the body effectively.
- Compression: Compression of an extremity is the most important component in removing accumulated fluid. Multiple options are available, though the gold standard treatment is performing a compression bandaging phase. Afterward, a compression garment assessment is completed with guidance on how to obtain an appropriate sleeve or stocking(s).
- Manual Therapy: In some cases, specialized manual therapy techniques are required to reduce cording or fibrosis in a region.
- Patient Education: The ultimate goal of therapy is to empower each patient with the knowledge of how to best manage their symptoms. This includes education regarding skin care and lymphedema precautions to reduce the risk of complications.
- Exercise: Appropriate exercises can assist in reducing swelling, as well as in regaining range of motion and strength of an affected region following surgery.
We aspire to treat the whole person affected by lymphedema and will customize a treatment plan that is optimal in achieving each patient’s goals.
