NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla., May 16, 2017 Florida Hospital New Smyrna recognized a nurse and two staff members with special awards.

Registered nurse Patricia Norman is the first nurse at Florida Hospital New Smyrna to receive the DAISY award.

The DAISY Award is an international program that rewards and celebrates extraordinary clinical skill and compassionate care provided by nurses. Created in 1999, more than 2,400 healthcare facilities in all 50 states, as well as 14 other countries, use the DAISY Award to honor nurses.

Norman works in the intensive care unit (ICU) and the colleague who nominated her expressed gratitude for her leadership in the unit.

We have improved out unit education because of Patti and her hard work! she wrote. Patti first and foremost is always a patient advocate, always keeping the patient first.

In addition, Charles Alexander and Kristen Tyler received Florida Hospital New Smyrna's new Starfish Award, which recognizes employees that are not nurses, but still provide impactful, compassionate patient care.

Alexander works in the registration department and was nominated by the daughter of a patient. Her mother is 89 years old, and aside from delivering five children, had never been admitted to the hospital until this Valentines Day, and was understandably feeling anxious about the process.

He not only cared about my mom and her health issues, but he cared about her as a person. He made my mom smile and took some of that anxious feeling away from her. He reassured her that the doctors and nurses in the hospital take good care of their patients and that if there was anything else he could do for her, to not hesitate to ask, she wrote in her nomination. You should be very proud and glad to have some like Charles on your staff. I can't tell you how that touched me, that someone would care enough to genuinely care for my 89-year-old mom.

Tyler is a certified nursing assistant in Florida Hospital New Smyrna's post-operative unit. She was nominated by a patient share cared for after a knee replacement surgery.

She was kind and attentive to my situation. She addressed my needs with great care and compassion, he wrote in her nomination form. When you are laying in a bed, it is nice to be treated as a human being and not a number.
