Karen Black was shocked when AdventHealth doctors told her she needed a heart transplant.

The University of Central Florida employee and Taekwondo instructor never had any cardiac-related health issues before tests showed she had congestive heart failure.

In 2018, a transplant team at AdventHealth Transplant Institute gave her a new heart. Black and Dr. Andrija Vidic, a transplant cardiologist, recently shared her story and discussed the critical need for organ donors in the U.S. on WFTV’s "Central Florida Spotlight" program. There are more than 104,000 people waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant in the U.S.

Florida residents can sign up to become an organ donor in just a few minutes by visiting www.donatelifeflorida.org.
