Herb Buchanan has been named president and CEO for AdventHealth Bolingbrook, effective Jan. 1, 2023. He will continue to report to Thor Thordarson, president/CEO for the Great Lakes Region of AdventHealth. Earlier this year, AdventHealth signed a definitive agreement to enter into an affiliation with the University of Chicago Medicine in the Great Lakes Region. A formal closing date is expected at the end of 2022 or in early 2023.
“Herb’s extensive operational experience and his deep understanding of our market make him highly qualified for this role,” Thordarson said. “Our Bolingbrook leadership team already knows him, and we’re excited to have him directly lead the facility to continue to provide world-class, whole-person care to the surrounding community.”
Currently, Buchanan serves as chief operating officer for the Great Lakes Region. As he steps into his new role, he will continue to support regional operations, sharing responsibilities with his fellow CEOs in the Great Lakes Region: Adam Maycock, president/CEO for AdventHealth Hinsdale and AdventHealth La Grange, and Vladimir Radivojevic, president/CEO for AdventHealth GlenOaks.
Buchanan has served as CEO at several academic medical institutions, including Indiana University Health and Howard University Hospital, in addition to serving as COO for the University of Maryland Medical Center and as vice president of operations for Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
He has a Master of Business Administration in health care, strategy and finance from Northwestern University; a Master of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan; and a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Buchanan is chair elect of the National Association of Health Services Executives board and also serves on the boards of the Will County Center for Economic Development, Midwest Health Foundation and Rainbow Hospice and Palliative Care.
“I’m deeply committed to the mission of faith-based health care in our region and am honored to have the opportunity to lead the delivery of mission at AdventHealth Bolingbrook while continuing to support regional operations,” he said.
Buchanan and his wife Michelle live in Naperville, Illinois, with sons RJ and Ryan. They have four additional adult children. Buchanan is a member of the Bolingbrook Seventh- day Adventist Church and enjoys participating in community activities.
