Your Bone Health Matters
Your bone tissue grows and changes every day, just like all of the other cells in your body. Caring for and nourish these cells is important to your whole health as bone cells and tissues are constantly replaced with new ones. The amount of bone cells and tissue you have is referred to as bone mass or bone density; the higher your bone density, the stronger your bones.
Bone density naturally diminishes as you age. Women are especially vulnerable, rapidly losing bone density because of the hormonal changes that occur during menopause.
And while low bone density happens more often and sooner in women, men are also affected as they age.
Low bone density can lead to a serious condition called osteoporosis, which causes your bones to become thin and fragile. If you have osteoporosis, you may have bone pain and be at a higher risk for fractures.
Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by weak, brittle bones that are easily broken. It’s most seen in older women. However, many men aged 50 and older also experience bone fractures due to osteoporosis.
A precursor to osteoporosis is called osteopenia, a condition that leads to diminished bone density, but not to the degree of osteoporosis.
Usually without symptoms until a bone breaks, osteoporosis can be detected with a Dexa scan or bone mineral density test. Effective treatments are available in the form of prescription medications, vitamin D and calcium supplements, along with lifestyle modifications such as not smoking and getting regular exercise.
Bone health can be affected by many factors. Some osteoporosis risk factors are not within our control, like:
- Being Caucasian or Asian
- Being female
- Being smaller in stature
- Growing older
- Having a family history of osteoporosis
- Having certain medical conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus or celiac disease
As far as what you can control, there are many steps you can take to positively influence your potential risk and protect your bones for a lifetime, including proper nutrition, getting enough physical activity and lifestyle changes, such as stopping smoking, limiting alcohol and making sure you get enough calcium and vitamin D in your diet through nutrition and/or supplementation.
If you’re concerned about your bone health or are post-menopausal, finding out how strong your bones are can be as simple as a painless test, like a DEXA scan, at your doctor’s appointment.

Our specialists are experts in treating knee pain caused by a wide array of conditions, including:
- Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries
- Medial collateral ligament (MCL) injuries
- Meniscus tears or deterioration
- Fractures
- Knee bursitis
- Patellar tendinitis (jumper’s knee)
- Iliotibial band (IT band) syndrome
- Dislocated kneecap
- Osteoarthritis
- Osteonecrosis
- Knee Pain Treatments
-
Our orthopedic specialists offer comprehensive treatment for knee pain. Using the latest techniques, we’ll diagnose the cause of your knee pain and work with you to create an individualized treatment plan. If appropriate, our knee specialists will recommend conservative treatments first, such as physical therapy or injections using corticosteroids or hyaluronic acid.
If surgery is necessary, we offer comprehensive options from ACL repair to total knee joint replacement. Our orthopedic surgeons also provide the latest advancements, such as custom implants and partial knee replacement.
Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy
Certain conditions that cause knee pain may benefit from a leading-edge procedure known as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. This treatment is used for specific conditions and usually after other non-surgical options have been tried. Our knee specialists will determine if this procedure is right for you. Done in our offices, PRP begins with an X-ray to identify the source of pain. The treatment is completed in a few minutes, and most patients can resume their normal activities the next day.
Custom Knee Replacement
Our practice is home to orthopedic surgeons specializing in total knee replacement surgery. Some patients may benefit from a specialized option of a custom implant. Using proprietary algorithms, this technology uses images from a computed technology (CT) scan to map your knee and create a 3D model. The software then uses that information to design a customized implant.
Partial Knee Replacement
Our orthopedic knee specialists are among only a few in the region to offer partial knee replacements to patients who are candidates for this total knee replacement alternative. Our specialists will help determine if you may be a candidate for one of the two types of partial replacement:
- Unicompartmental arthroplasty for the inside or outside of the knee: most patients go home the same day versus three or four days for a total knee replacement
- Patellofemoral arthroplasty to replace the kneecap: patients typically spend one night in the hospital
Meniscus Repair
Our orthopedic physicians are highly experienced in partial meniscectomy, which trims or removes the damaged tissue to restore stability and eliminate pain.
Osteonecrosis Bone Disease Treatment
Our doctors provide expert treatment for osteonecrosis. They perform arthroscopic microfracture and core decompression to treat osteonecrosis.
Sports Medicine
We also offer specialized services for knee pain and sports-related injuries. Our sports medicine experts have advanced treatment in ligament tears, including ACL and MCL injuries, IT band syndrome and jumper’s knee. We can recommend treatment to relieve the pain as quickly as possible to get you back in action and prevention measures to help ensure the problem doesn’t occur again.
- Hip Care
-
Anterior Hip Replacement Surgery
We offer hip replacement surgery using the direct anterior (front) approach, which features smaller incisions and generally affords patients a faster discharge from the hospital and a quicker recovery time. Anterior hip surgery is performed through a three- to five-inch incision in the front of the hip rather than the more traditional surgery through the back of the hip. The surgeon can access the joint between muscles instead of making incisions through the gluteal muscles, which is necessary with the traditional posterior approach. This means patients have less pain and fewer restrictions after surgery.
With the anterior approach to hip replacement surgery, many patients can leave the hospital on the same day of their surgery. After about three months of recovery, hip replacement patients can return to fully active lives.
Accelerated Recovery Program for Hip Surgery
Our orthopedic physicians have helped develop the accelerated recovery program that gets patients home faster, with less pain. Through the program, our surgeons use minimally invasive techniques and apply regional blocks instead of general anesthesia. Regional blocks around the joint allow for pain-free surgery without general anesthesia's risks or lingering effects. Patients in the program start walking and participating in physical therapy on the day of surgery, and most go home the same day or the day after.
Benefits of accelerated recovery include less pain, swelling and blood loss, a shorter hospital stay, fewer problems such as blood clots and infections and a faster return to normal activities.
Hip Joint Resurfacing
Rather than replacing the entire hip joint, our orthopedic doctors replace the hip socket with a metal cup and then reshape the damaged hip ball and cap it with a metal, dome-shaped prosthesis. This procedure benefits younger patients with hip degeneration who want to continue working physically demanding jobs or participating in activities requiring flexibility.
Sports Medicine
We also offer specialized services for hip pain and hip injuries resulting from participating in sports or activities. Our sports medicine experts can provide non-surgical treatments as well as surgery for conditions including ligament tears, muscle strains including proximal hip and quadriceps strains, iliotibial (IT) band syndrome and labral cartilage tears. Often, a joint or the surrounding structure will be compromised after a sports injury, so our orthopedic doctors also focus on rebuilding strength to prevent future injury.

- Shoulder and Elbow Pain Treatment Options
-
Our specialists offer you comprehensive treatment for shoulder and elbow pain. Whenever possible, we’ll begin with non-surgical treatments such as steroid injections and physical therapy. If surgery is necessary, rest assured that our orthopedic surgeons offer leading-edge shoulder and elbow surgeries, including many of the latest procedures.
Plasma-Rich Protein Injections
Some conditions that cause shoulder or elbow pain may benefit from platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. If physical therapy, medications and steroid injections have not helped relieve your pain, your orthopedic doctor may recommend PRP. In this procedure, the patient’s blood is drawn, and platelets, known to reduce inflammation and promote healing, are injected into the affected area. It is typically an outpatient procedure, and most patients can resume their normal activities the next day.
Shoulder Reconstruction Surgery
Our expert orthopedic surgeons can perform shoulder reconstruction procedures arthroscopically, using small incisions that allow tiny instruments to perform precise repairs. Arthroscopic shoulder reconstruction is typically performed as an outpatient surgery. Some patients may need an open surgical procedure that involves a larger incision over the shoulder to perform the repair.
CT-Guided Shoulder Reconstruction
We are one of only a handful of practices in the region with orthopedic surgeons specially trained to offer shoulder reconstruction surgery using computed tomography (CT) imaging. With this leading-edge technology, advanced CT images guide the surgeon to the best possible positioning for the repair, which allows the surgery to provide maximum stability.
Biologic Shoulder Resurfacing
This procedure preserves the patient’s normal anatomy, replacing worn, arthritic cartilage of the shoulder joint with donor cartilage.
Frozen Shoulder Surgery
During this procedure, tight portions of the shoulder joint capsule are cut via small incisions to stretch and release the stiffened capsule. Manipulation involves gently moving the shoulder enough to stretch or tear the accumulated scar tissue, increasing the range of motion.
Total Shoulder Replacement
When the shoulder joint is severely damaged by osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, post-traumatic arthritis or a rotator cuff tear, our surgeons will discuss whether a total shoulder replacement is the best option. If surgery is recommended, our surgeons are highly experienced and will provide the highest level of care.
Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement
In certain circumstances, a patient may need a reverse total shoulder replacement to allow other muscles to do the work of the rotator cuff. Candidates for reverse total shoulder replacement include those who have:
- A completely torn rotator cuff that cannot be repaired
- Joint disease or deterioration caused by a rotator cuff tear
- A previous shoulder replacement that was unsuccessful
- Severe shoulder pain
- A complex fracture of the shoulder joint
- Chronic shoulder dislocation
Elbow Arthroscopy
If surgery is recommended to relieve symptoms and improve a patient's range of motion, we typically perform elbow arthroscopy as an outpatient procedure. Our orthopedic surgeons also use this procedure to smooth irregular surfaces and remove bone spurs.
Ulnar Collateral Ligament (UCL) Reconstruction
Also known as Tommy John surgery, our surgeons can perform UCL reconstruction, using a healthy tendon from elsewhere in the body to replace the torn ligament in the shoulder.
Sports Medicine
Our sports medicine experts have advanced treatment in conditions including ligament tears, tennis elbow and golfers’ elbow. We can recommend treatment to relieve the pain quickly and offer prevention measures, too.

Whenever appropriate, our specialists will start with conservative treatments, such as physical therapy or injections using corticosteroids.
If surgery is necessary, our physicians are highly skilled in a variety of advanced surgical techniques to relieve hand and wrist pain, including:
Minimally Invasive Carpal Tunnel Surgery
In this procedure, also referred to as endoscopic carpal tunnel release, our expert orthopedic doctors will use a miniature camera (endoscope) to see inside your hand and wrist to divide the transverse carpal ligament and relieve pain in the nerve.
Carpometacarpal Joint Arthritis Surgery
Our hand and wrist specialists provide the following surgeries for joint arthritis:
- Joint fusion (arthrodesis)
- Osteotomy
- Trapeziectomy
- Joint replacement (arthroplasty)

If surgery is the best option, our team offers comprehensive surgical options that use leading-edge techniques.
Minimally Invasive Robotic-Assisted Spine Surgery
Our surgeons were among the region’s first to offer surgery using the precision of robotic-assisted technology to spine surgery patients. Our surgeons use the Mazor™ robotic guidance system to place spinal implants precisely. With this technology, the surgeon can load images of the patient’s anatomy into specialized software to create a three-dimensional view of the procedure before the patient enters the operating room. This advanced planning and the system’s instrumentation ensure a high degree of precision. In addition, the system allows for smaller incisions, which promote faster healing and minimize damage to healthy tissue.
Lumbar Laminotomy for Compressed Nerves
We’re highly experienced at performing minimally invasive decompression surgery, known as lumbar laminotomy, which can relieve pain caused by sciatica, disk herniation, arthritis or structural compression. Using minimally invasive techniques means that patients typically spend only a few days in the hospital, experience a full and rapid recovery and can resume regular activities in just a few weeks.
Laminectomy
Our spine surgeons are experts at performing minimally invasive lumbar laminectomy. Patients often go home the same day, and recovery times are much shorter than with traditional, open surgeries. Many patients can return to work and other regular activities within a few days.
Sports Medicine
Our spine surgeons also offer specialized services for neck, back and spinal injuries resulting from sports or activity. We can provide treatment to relieve the pain as quickly as possible to get you back in action and suggest prevention measures to help ensure the problem doesn’t occur again.
