Bleeding and Coagulation Disorders

Bleeding and coagulation disorders can include inherited conditions such as hemophilia as well as acquired conditions that may arise from the use of certain medications or from certain disease processes. Symptoms may include easy bruising, anemia, frequent nosebleeds, bleeding gums, hematuria (blood in the urine), prolonged bleeding from minor cuts, vision problems and unusual paleness of the skin. You have an elevated risk of developing a bleeding disorder if such a condition runs in your family, if you have an underlying disease that causes bleeding problems or if you use certain medications. Treatments depend upon the specific type of blood disorder and severity of its symptoms, but may include Vitamin K supplements, prescribed medications, immune therapies, clot factor replacement, platelet transfusions and fresh frozen plasma transfusions.
