Heart Disease in Women

Our physicians are leading providers of medical evaluation and care for women with all types of cardiovascular diseases – particularly coronary heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in adults of both sexes in the United States – as well as coronary microvascular disease and broken heart syndrome (also known as stress-induced cardiomyopathy). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately one out of every four U.S. women died of heart disease in 2013, with both African American and white women counting this as their No. 1 cause of death and Hispanic women counting both heart disease and cancer at the top of the list. Women who have diabetes, are overweight, consume too much alcohol, lead a sedentary lifestyle and have poor dietary habits are at an elevated risk of developing heart disease compared to their peers.
