Laparoscopic Surgery
In laparoscopic surgery, specially designed instruments -- including a laparoscope with a tiny light and camera at the end -- are employed to carry out an operation through very small external incisions. This advanced technique, which is increasingly employed in a wide variety of fields, can result in fewer post-operative complications, a quicker recovery time, less scarring and other potential benefits for the patient in comparison to traditional, “open” surgical methods. Some laparoscopic surgeries involve the use of a computer-assisted robotic system such as the Da Vinci™ platform. Another form of laparoscopic surgery is called “single-incision surgery,” where the entire operation takes place through just one incision that is perhaps two inches long. Your surgeon will discuss your options for minimally invasive surgery and whether you could be a candidate for a laparoscopic approach.
