Rectocele Repair
A rectocele is a common occurrence following vaginal childbirth, where the lower rectum bulges (or herniates) into the vagina and makes it difficult for the patient to have a bowel movement. The typical surgery to address this problem is called transvaginal rectocele repair. It is performed with the patient under general anesthesia and typically requires a one night stay in the hospital. Another, more recently developed procedure for rectocele repair is called the STARR procedure (for stapled transanal rectal resection). In both cases, patients are told to avoid heavy lifting or significant straining of any kind for at least three weeks following their surgery. Your surgeon will thoroughly discuss your recommended treatment options based on your specific condition.
