Deep Brain Stimulation Changes Margaret's Life

Margaret Kohn was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease 10 years ago by Dr. Arnaldo Isa, a neurologist at AdventHealth. Her diagnosis is a progressive disorder with no known cure that affects the nervous system, often with uncontrollable tremors. Symptoms start slowly but eventually severely disrupt motor skills and speech — all things necessary for survival.

Margaret’s symptoms progressed rapidly. She was unable to perform even the simplest tasks, including tying her shoelaces. Margaret was treated with a series of medications that eventually were no longer effective. This all changed when Dr. Mitesh Lotia introduced her to Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS).

DBS is a neurosurgical procedure that uses implanted electrodes and electrical stimulation to treat movement disorders associated with Parkinson’s disease (PD), essential tremor, dystonia and other neurological conditions. “When Dr. Lotia told me about this, there was no question that I wanted to have this done,” shared Margaret.

Margaret was scheduled for two surgeries to complete the procedure in April 2024. The procedure yielded immediate results and showed remarkable improvement in her motor skills and reduced her tremors to a near stillness. Since her surgery, Margaret has dedicated her time to bringing awareness and gathering support for the neurological advances at AdventHealth.

“I am focused on the new opportunities and ways I can continue to support and connect with others in the Parkinson's community. My journey is far from over, and my experiences can still inspire and uplift others on their own paths.

Thank you to all my friends, family, and supporters who have been there for me every step of the way. Your love and encouragement mean the world to me. I couldn't do this without you all by my side. You are my rock, my inspiration, and my motivation to keep pushing forward. Thank you for being my Margie's Parkies (you know like…Taylor’s Swifties). You all hold a special place in my heart, and I am forever grateful for your unwavering support,” shared Margaret.
