April is National Donate Life Month. This campaign aims to raise awareness about organ donation and encourage Americans to become donors. At AdventHealth Central Texas, we celebrate those who share the gift of life with others. Since 2019, doctors, nurses, hospital staff, family and friends have lined our hospital hallways to honor the final heroic gesture of an organ donor. As the donor is pushed from the intensive care unit to the operating room during the “Honor Walk,” attendees quietly pay their respects. Depending on the time of day, anywhere between 20 and 50 people fill the halls during the 15-minute walk. “It can be a very somber and emotional experience,” says Stephanie Roberts, director of surgical services at AdventHealth Central Texas. “But at the same time, it’s a beautiful moment, and we can see how much it means to the families.” So far, Roberts and her team have organized seven Honor Walks and will continue doing so well into the future. “It’s the least we can do for these people who have given so much,” Roberts says. “They are truly heroes.”
