Breaking the Stigma: Why Men Delay Bariatric Surgery

Gender Disparity in Bariatric Weight-Loss Procedures

One study from the University of California, Davis concluded that of the more than 1,300 patients evaluated for bariatric surgery at UC Davis during a four-year span, 82% of them were female. Compared to women, men in the U.S. are more likely to die prematurely and less likely to seek out preventive health care when they’re feeling well.

A body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above is considered obese, and higher levels of accumulated bodily fat can present serious risks to your health. Compared to people without obesity, individuals who are considered obese are at a higher risk of developing weight-related conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, depression and elevated levels of cholesterol and fat in the blood. Further research shows that men with obesity are more likely than women with obesity to develop some of these conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea and metabolic syndrome.

Despite the various elevated health risks, men are still more likely to put off or avoid weight loss procedures than women. But why? Generally, men are less likely to have an accurate perception of their weight, less likely to show dissatisfaction with their weight and less likely to experience social, cultural or reproductive pressures regarding their weight compared to women. For these reasons, men with obesity are more likely to put weight loss on the back burner.
