Gynecologic oncologists are physicians who are committed to the comprehensive treatment of women with, or who are at risk for, gynecologic cancer. At AdventHealth Cancer Institute (AHCI), our gynecologic oncologists are focused on providing whole-person care in a safe, comfortable environment.

Gynecologic Oncology at AdventHealth Cancer Institute

We are here to help you face gynecologic cancer with innovative treatments, nutritional guidance, emotional support and more. Our team is committed to not only helping you heal, but also to nurture both your mind and spirit as you face this highly prevalent cancer.

From diagnosis to treatment and beyond, you’ll have access to our state-of-the-art clinical research center and experienced physicians whose patient success stories surpass the national average. “As part of one of the leading health care systems in the Southeast, we treat more new cases of gynecologic cancer than any hospital in Florida, so you’re in good hands with us,” says gynecologic oncologist James Kendrick, MD, director of clinical operations for the gynecologic oncology program at AdventHealth Cancer Institute.

Innovative Gynecologic Cancer Treatment Options

A cancer that starts in a woman’s reproductive organs is considered gynecologic cancer. Our expert physicians and clinicians are sensitive to individual patient needs and approach cases with a multidisciplinary focus to design unique treatment options for each person.

Innovative treatment options include:

  • Minimally invasive, robotic-assisted surgery options that help patients recover quickly, including:
  • Infra-renal lymphadenectomy, robotic splenectomy, and both radical and simple hysterectomy surgery services
  • Fertility-sparing procedures and treatments to preserve and protect reproductive organs
  • Immunotherapy treatments that use a patient’s own immune system to fight cancer
  • Chemotherapy drugs tailored to patients’ individual diagnosis
  • Radiation therapies refined to minimize radiation exposure to healthy tissue and organs

Advanced Surgical Procedures

Using tools such as the da Vinci® Surgical System, our surgeons provide superior accuracy and reduced recovery times. The da Vinci system accomplishes this through high-magnification, 3D-HD vision and advanced wristed instrumentation.

The system also has an integrated fluorescence imaging technology called FireFly™ that enables precision sentinel lymph node mapping, which reduces surgical morbidity compared to standard lymphadenectomy.

“Our program has been instrumental in the development of sentinel lymph node (SNL) mapping for gynecologic cancers, and our research in SNL mapping for uterine cancers has been recognized by the National Cancer Network (NCCN) Guidelines Committee, making SNL biopsies standard of care in the United States,” says Dr. Kendrick.

If you are given a gynecologic cancer diagnosis, rest assured you will be in good hands. Each of our oncologists are highly specialized in the field and educate fellow gynecologic oncologists from around the world on the latest surgical procedures, including minimally invasive and fertility-preserving options. Our oncologists are also heavily involved in new research and clinical trials, innovating ways to treat gynecologic cancers.

Whole-Person Approach to Gynecologic Cancer

Our specialists combine traditional treatment with care for the whole person, including mind, body and spirit. Patients in our program have access to the Healthy Eating & Active Lifestyle (HEAL) program, which provides resources like a registered dietician, Eden Spa’s restorative services during and after cancer treatment and Lifestyle Medicine applications to empower healing at every stage.

Lifestyle Medicine focuses on prevention and treatment of disease by changing lifestyle factors including nutrition, physical inactivity and chronic stress. “We’re seeing great shifts in patients’ recovery and wellbeing when we implement Lifestyle Medicine strategies in patient care,” says Dr. Kendrick.

AdventHealth Orlando has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report for providing the Best Women’s Care in Orlando. Our physicians continue to set new standards in surgery and chemotherapy that shape the future of gynecologic cancer treatment.
