Volunteers from around the country are joining the American Heart Association to celebrate American Heart Month by knitting and crocheting red hats for babies born in February. We are honored to be one of the hospitals receiving hat donations.

Little Hats, Big Hearts honors babies, moms and heart healthy lives in a very special way. Supporters are knitting and crocheting red hats to be given out to thousands of babies during American Heart Month in order to empower moms to live heart healthy lives and to help their children do the same.

Together, we are working to raise awareness, provide resources and inspire moms to take their familys heart health to heart while also raising awareness about congenital heart defects.

How You Can Help

If you knit or crochet, please volunteer your talents for the Little Hats, Big Hearts project. Our goal is to collect more than 1,500 hats, one for each baby born at our hospitals in February 2018.

The deadline to drop off hats for the donation ceremony is January 15; however, we will continue to accept hats throughout February.

Pattern Suggestions

We recommend simple hat patterns. While we love bows and buttons, they can come off the hats and be dangerous for the little ones.

Sample patterns for baby hats can be found here:

Yarn specifics:

  • red
  • cotton or acrylic
  • medium to heavy weight
  • machine washable and dryable

Not a knitter? The American Heart Association can also accept donations of yarn to help those who will be knitting or crocheting hats.
