Flexible bronchoscopy
During this exam, a flexible scope is moved through your main airways while you’re under general anesthesia. With video images, your care team can evaluate your airways for abnormalities. They can also suction secretions and collect samples if needed.
Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL)
During BAL, sterile saline is injected through the working channel of the bronchoscope and into a specific segment of your lung. The fluid is then aspirated back out of your lung for testing so we can diagnose conditions, including inflammation, infection, cancer or bleeding.
Lung biopsy
Biopsies, which can be performed with a needle, forceps or cryoprobe to extract a tissue sample, can help your care team detect inflammation, cancer or infection.
Endobronchial ultrasound system (EBUS)
The EBUS system uses a flexible bronchoscope with a built-in ultrasound to view structures outside your airway wall. Using ultrasound imaging as a guide, a needle is passed through the working channel and into the abnormal structure to take samples to detect inflammation, infection or cancer.
Rigid bronchoscopy
In a rigid bronchoscopy, a long metal tube (the rigid bronchoscope) is navigated through your windpipe and main airways to provide video images that can help your care team rule out or diagnose lung conditions. The large diameter of this bronchoscope also allows your doctor to use larger instruments, when needed, for certain treatments.
Our newest leading-edge cancer-fighting technology, the TrueBeam Radiotherapy System from Varian Medical Systems, is a powerful radiation therapy with pinpoint accuracy for lung cancer.
It also means faster treatment times. Because it’s a quicker, more targeted treatment, even as tumors move and change over time, less time is spent on radiation. The TrueBeam system can complete treatment in less time than previous treatment options. Every step to make treatments more accurate will help reduce side effects.
Lung Cancer Screenings Save Lives
-
Q:Question: Why are lung health screenings important?
A:Answer:Lung health screenings save lives. Lung cancer is the single leading cause of cancer death in the United States and is the second leading cause of overall death in the United States. Early screening leads to a higher chance of finding cancer in its early stages where there are more treatment options for lung cancer and survival rates are greatly improved.
Continue ReadingReceiving a lung health screening through a qualified, low-dose lung computed tomography (CT) program is the most effective way to detect lung cancer at an early stage.
-
Q:Question: What happens if something is found?
A:Answer:In many cases, abnormalities found from the screening are non-cancerous.
However, if a high cause for concern is found, your health care provider will determine the best treatment for you as soon as possible.
-
Q:Question: Who should be screened?
A:Answer:You should get screened annually if you meet the following conditions:
Continue Reading- You are between the ages of 50 to 77 (with Medicare) or 50 to 80 (with private insurance)
- You have a smoking history of at least 20-pack years (pack years = years smoked x packs per day).
- You quit smoking less than 15 years ago, or you are still currently smoking
- You have no new symptoms (e.g., cough, shortness of breath or unexplained weight loss).
-
Q:Question: What takes place during a lung cancer screening?
A:Answer:Low-dose computed tomography (CT), also known as a Low-dose CT lung screen or LDCT scan, is the only recommended screening test for the early detection of lung cancer. Your primary care provider can refer you to us for this service.
Continue ReadingThe scan is easy, painless and complete in minutes. There are no needles and no contrast to drink.
During your LDCT scan, you’ll lie flat on your back on the scanner table. At various points in the scanning process, we’ll ask you to hold your breath for short intervals (about five to 10 seconds).
There are no dietary or medication restrictions before your appointment, and you can resume your normal activities as soon as your scan is over.
