Quality Medical Information for Effective Patient Care in Eastern Kansas and Western Missouri
Founded in 1978, the AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Medical Library represents a contemporary marriage of modern medicine with today’s information gathering technologies in a focus on effective patient care.
The Medical Library primarily services the Medical Staff, the Nursing Staff and the Administrative Staff of AdventHealth Shawnee Mission. It is also available to medical personnel throughout the United States and other countries through our OCLC and DOCLINE connections. While circulation privileges are limited to the AdventHealth Shawnee Mission health care community, the public is welcome to utilize the in-house services of the Medical Library.
Holdings
In addition to almost 10,000 books on medical and related topics, the library maintains subscriptions to over 3,900 journals.

Access
Access to the collection is via EOS Web Express software. This internet system provides searching capacity for the entire collection. In addition it provides automated check in/out, cataloging, and collection control.
Literature Searches
The backbone of library operations is the electronic search for important medical information. In this activity, the premier tool is the electronic database. The library utilizes the following:

- OVID with 274 full text journals
- ClinicalKey with full text to over 500 medical journals and over 1000 medical reference books

Inter-Library Loan
The library makes use of the Inter-Library Loan opportunities made available by the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) and DOCLINE from the National Library of Medicine.
Continuing Education
The continuing education of the SMH medical and nursing staff is an area of prime concern of the Medical Library.
To this end the library maintains audio and video collections for self-directed instruction.
Document Delivery
Rapid transmission of both search results and journal articles is available via, email, Ariel, fax and regular mail.
