When you’re preparing for a baby, you want to do everything right. But where do you start? When you choose the Birth Center at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission, you choose a partner that will guide you through every stage of childbirth planning.
At 20 weeks, you can pre-register for your delivery and access important information regarding our maternity navigation program and our childbirth, breastfeeding and newborn classes. To get started, fill out the pre-registration form today!
Our maternity care navigation program pairs you with your own personal OB nurse navigator, a registered RN, who will answer your questions, give advice, be your advocate and help you prepare as the time for delivery draws closer.
At 32 weeks into your pregnancy, contact our maternity navigator’s office to schedule a one-hour visit. During the visit, we’ll work with you one-on-one to:
- Complete admission paperwork
- Discuss your birth plan and vision for delivery
- Provide you with our “Birth, Babies and Beyond” childbirth preparation booklet
- Recommend classes and events to help you prepare
- Review your financial responsibility
- Sign consent forms
- Talk about any delivery health risks you may have
- Designate your chosen Newborn Provider
- Tour the AdventHealth Birth Center

Motherhood comes with unique joys and challenges that evolve over time. So our support doesn’t end when you meet your beautiful baby. We follow up with you after you leave the hospital to ensure you’re adjusting at home.

Childbirth 5-Week Class
Our five-week childbirth class series is ideal for first-time parents. A certified childbirth educator will cover stages of labor, comfort measures and positions, what to expect at the hospital, medications and much more. This course includes the Newborn Care class and a tour of the Birth Center. Fee includes mother and partner as one registration.Childbirth Weekend
The childbirth two-part weekend class is perfect for experienced mothers who would like a refresher before their next new arrival, or for anyone whose schedule doesn’t permit them to take the five-week class. A certified childbirth educator will cover stages of labor, comfort measures and positions, what to expect at the hospital, medications and much more.Online Childbirth Class
Our online childbirth class is perfect for anyone with a busy schedule who needs to learn at their own pace. If you have a high-risk pregnancy or have been placed on bed rest, this is also a great way for you to get the advice and education you need prior to giving birth. - Parent and Family Education Classes

Planning for a baby is a family affair, which is why we offer a wide selection of parent and family education classes. These fun events help everyone navigate the arrival of the new addition before, during and after birth. Class and event topics include:
- CPR and pediatric first aid
- Natural childbirth strategies
- Online breastfeeding and newborn classes
- Pet preparation
- Prenatal fitness and yoga
- Returning to work while pumping
- Sibling education classes (ages 3 – 6)
