AdventHealth Medical Group this week welcomed a leading breast surgeon to the AdventHealth Cancer Center Shawnee Mission. Board-certified, fellowship-trained breast surgeon Elizabeth Butler, DO, FACS, FACOS, specializes in breast disease and will treat both benign and malignant conditions.

Dr. Butler’s arrival represents continued expansion of AdventHealth’s comprehensive breast program, which also includes breast oncology care, a High Risk Breast Clinic, 3D mammography and additional supportive services.

At AdventHealth Medical Group Breast Surgery at Shawnee Mission, Dr. Butler will provide surgical care for high-risk breast cancer patients, including those with genetic susceptibility such as BRCA 1 and 2 and strong family histories. She is trained in oncoplastic breast surgery, hidden scar technique and nipple-sparing mastectomy. In the operating room, she implements the latest technologies and advances, including wire-free cancer localization. At AdventHealth, she and her team will leverage Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols to decrease opioid use, pain, nausea and length of hospital stay.

Highly regarded by both peers and patients, Dr. Butler has earned several honors for clinical competence and compassionate patient care, and she has researched, published and presented extensively on breast disease. Prior to joining AdventHealth, she had worked as a breast surgeon at hospitals in and around Kansas City since 2017.

“Dr. Butler has a fantastic reputation as a standout in the breast surgery field, and we’re honored she chose to join the AdventHealth team,” said Connie Wood, service line administrator for oncology and breast centers. “Patients needing surgery due to breast disease will benefit greatly from her specialized expertise and warm bedside manner.”

After earning her medical degree at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, Dr. Butler completed her general surgery residency, including service as chief resident, at the University of New England and St. Joseph's Health. She then completed a fellowship in breast disease at Brown University and Women & Infants Hospital. She is Board-certified in general surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (FACOS).

Dr. Butler joins the AdventHealth Cancer Center Shawnee Mission at a time of transformation and growth of AdventHealth’s oncology care services. The all-new AdventHealth Cancer Institute, a three-story, 71,000 sq. ft. facility scheduled to open in spring 2024, will be a completely dedicated space where cancer care services—physician clinics, CT and PET scans, infusion, radiation and laboratory—will come together for an even more integrated and comprehensive patient experience.

“I’m excited to join a program with an outstanding reputation for patient-centered cancer care,” said Dr. Butler. “With the addition of the new Cancer Institute and expansion of our breast surgical oncology program, we will be able to provide the latest in women’s cancer care using research-based treatments with a personalized touch.”

At the AdventHealth Cancer Center Shawnee Mission, Dr. Butler joins a team of 26 outpatient providers who care for patients with cancer or potentially cancerous conditions.
