A health emergency during pregnancy requires a special level of care. That’s why AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Birth Center has an Obstetric Emergency Department (OB ED) equipped to treat expectant mothers 20+ weeks gestation and their babies.
AdventHealth’s OB ED is staffed round the clock with experienced OB physicians, Certified Nurse Midwives and registered nurses. The OB ED treats pregnancy- and postpartum-related concerns, giving pregnant women immediate access to a provider at all hours. From OB ED, moms are admitted to the Birth Center for inpatient care, including birth, or discharged with guidance on next steps. It’s our way to ensure moms and babies are safe through every step of pregnancy and beyond.

- What Is an Obstetrical Emergency Department?

An OB ED provides timely and specialized emergency care to pregnant patients, that are greater than 20 weeks gestation. OB ED is an extension of a hospital’s traditional ED and is staffed with an experienced obstetrical team that can care for you 24/7.
If a patient arrives with a life-endangering obstetrical emergency, the obstetrics emergency department can provide immediate care for mom and baby. Expert OB physicians, Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM) and nurses evaluate and treat pregnant and postpartum patients quickly and efficiently.

OB ED providers and nurses are highly specialized with training in protecting the mother while pregnant and keeping the baby safe in the womb. This expert knowledge allows them to act quickly and provide the proper treatment, which can be lifesaving. Other benefits include:
- Availability of obstetric specialists in early mornings or late evening hours when your OB/GYN may be closed
- Comprehensive reviews of test results and fetal heart rate monitoring
- Coordination of care and communication of the patient’s condition to your OB/GYN if they are unable to come to the hospital
- Evaluation and management of pregnancy-related concerns
- Treatment for postpartum-related issues in the first few weeks after delivery
- When Should You Go to an Obstetric Emergency Department?

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, or have any other concerns, call your primary OB/GYN or head to the OB ED for quick evaluation and treatment:
- Abdominal pain or contractions
- Pre-eclampsia
- Concerns about pre-term labor
- Conditions related to high-risk pregnancy
- Vaginal bleeding
- Postpartum complications
- Ruptured membranes
- Urinary tract or bladder infections
- Decrease in normal fetal movement
- Increased blood pressure

The OB ED is located within the AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Birth Center on the second floor. Patients can walk in 24 hours a day, seven days a week. No appointment or referral is needed.
