Mapping Your Egg Preservation Journey
Our compassionate team is ready to support you in planning for your future family. We’ll be by your side to answer your questions and help you prepare your body for egg freezing.
- People Who Can Benefit From Egg Freezing
-
Whether you’re freezing your eggs for more convenient family planning or out of caution for your future health, there are multiple benefits to freezing eggs. Here are some scenarios where ovum freezing can help families:
- Hopeful parents experiencing difficulties with infertility can use frozen donor eggs to become pregnant or with the help of a gestational carrier
- People facing a health crisis can freeze their eggs before beginning any treatments or procedures that may affect their future fertility or the quality of their eggs
- Women who are not ready to start their families can freeze their eggs to use later in life
- Navigating the Egg Freezing Process
-
During your first appointment, our experts will thoroughly assess whether the procedure is right for you. We’ll ask about your medical history and reproductive health, order lab work and complete a physical exam. We’ll assess your overall likelihood of success with egg freezing and help you navigate your next steps.
After your examination, you’ll begin a 10- to 14-day series of medications and injections to help your body increase its egg production — similar to what IVF patients undergo. Our team will monitor you closely throughout the process to ensure your body responds to the treatment.
Next comes the egg collection stage. You’ll undergo a minor procedure that takes approximately an hour, followed by time to recover from a mild sedative. During your procedure, one of our experienced fertility specialists will remove a select number of eggs and, together with our skilled embryologist, will assess which eggs are best suited for cryopreservation.
Then, using a state-of-the-art vitrification process, we’ll preserve your eggs so they’ll be ready when you need them. Your eggs will be kept in high-quality storage containers with fail-safe liquid nitrogen refrigeration and backup power supplies, where they’ll remain safe and secure for nearly a decade.
When you decide it’s the right time to become a parent, we’ll retrieve your eggs and begin IVF for you or your gestational carrier, introducing sperm into the thawed egg and preparing your embryo for implantation.
It’s also important to consider what you wish to do with your eggs if you decide you no longer need to want them in the future.
- Lifestyle Considerations as You Prepare for Egg Freezing
-
Women are born with all the eggs they will ever have, and that number reduces with age. We know you want to ensure your remaining eggs are as healthy as possible. Certain lifestyle factors can affect your fertility and boost the quality of your eggs, including:
- Abstain from alcohol: Alcohol can affect your ovulation and egg health, causing complications and increased risks. We recommend abstaining from alcohol as you prepare for your egg retrieval.
- Avoid smoking: The chemicals in a cigarette permanently speed up egg loss in the ovaries and mutate the DNA in a woman’s egg cells, making some unsuitable for conception.
- Boost blood flow by staying hydrated: Good egg health is aided by oxygen-rich blood flow to the ovaries. Dehydration can quickly decrease blood flow, so aim to drink at least 64 ounces of water each day.
- Maintain a balanced diet rich in antioxidants: Eat nutrient-rich foods, with an emphasis on plant-based foods, including lean proteins, whole grains, healthy fats like nuts and olive oil, and a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. Avoid consuming an abundance of refined carbohydrates, processed foods or meats and excessive salt and sugar during this time.
