TAVARES, Fla., February 26, 2019 – AdventHealth Waterman recognized registered nurse Charles Buckhannon with the DAISY award.
The DAISY Award is an international program that rewards and celebrates extraordinary clinical skill and compassionate care provided by nurses.
Buckhannon works on the 6 South unit caring for medical and orthopedic patients and was nominated for this recognition by the wife of a patient.
“When my husband was admitted to the hospital in the wee hours of a November morning, he was suffering from vascular dementia and withdrawal from an antipsychotic drug. He was disoriented and extremely agitated,” the wife of the patient wrote, describing the attentive care Charles provided to her husband. “Charles Buckhannon is the purest example of a nurse. I thank God he has chosen to serve those who are unable to help themselves.”
She also was appreciative of the care Buckhannon provided her, even though she was not the patient.
“In addition to his amazing care of my husband, Charles spoke with me and counseled me when I was incredibly distraught, confused and sad about my husband’s recent outbursts and actions. Charles explained the disease and assured me he would be better with the correct care,” she wrote. “He shared personal experiences he had with his own family members and how he had dealt with them. He lovingly treated my husband as if he were on of his own family who was suffering, not just a crazy old man who was making his job more difficult.”
Created in 1999, more than 2,500 healthcare facilities in all 50 states, as well as 15 other countries, use the DAISY Award to honor nurses.
In recognition of this honor, Buckhannon received a bouquet of daisies, a certificate, a tote bag, and a hand-carved stone sculpture of the “Healer’s Touch” by an artist of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe.
His unit, the AdventHealth Waterman 6 South unit, also received cinnamon rolls and a DAISY banner to display.
