7 Ways to Sneak Exercise Into Your Day

From improving your heart health to helping you lose weight, regular exercise has many benefits for your whole health. But in today’s busy world you might find it hard to make time for physical activity.

Finding creative ways to sneak more movement into your day — even in brief five to 10 minutes spurts — can have a positive impact on your whole health over time. Try these techniques to get more physical activity even if your schedule is packed.

Wake Up and Stretch

People naturally want to stretch when they wake up. Instead of one big stretch over your head, turn your morning stretch into a quick exercise routine. You might perform a specific series of stretches each day or even do crunches or push-ups before hopping in the shower. Whatever exercises feel good to you, are the right ones for starting your day with a burst of energy.

Change How You Get to Work

While it isn’t possible for everyone to walk to work, you can find new ways to get from your front door to your desk or job site that involve increased physical activity. You might consider:

  • Biking to work
  • Parking farther away from the entrance to work
  • Taking the stairs instead of the elevator
  • Walking to work or taking public transportation (which involves a walk to the bus stop)

If you work from home or stay home with children, try adding your own little commute to the day by walking around your neighborhood for 15 minutes before settling in to the day’s tasks.

Make the Most of Lunch

On your lunch break, eating may only take 10 or 15 minutes. Use the rest of the time to get up and get active. You might listen to a podcast while you take a walk or get some exercise on the stairs. If you have enough time, head to the gym or run errands (on foot, if possible).

Communicate in Person

When you need to tell your coworker something, skip the email and walk to their workspace instead. Even short walks add up over time. You’ll also get more social time in your day, which is important for feeling more connected to your peers and colleagues.

Walk Your Dog

Sure, it’s easier to just let the dog out into the yard. But a daily walk will help both you and your dog get healthier. Plus, as it becomes part of your routine, your dog will be sure to remind you when it’s time to get up and get moving.

Do Your Chores

Cleaning, gardening, washing the car and mowing the lawn are all great ways to get moving. Make them part of your plan to increase your physical activity. Not only will you get some exercise, but you’ll be able to see evidence of how productive you’ve been that day.
