Gynecologic Cancer Treatment Options and Signs You Need Care

Chemotherapy

Nothing matters more to us than getting you well. Depending on what type of gynecologic cancer you have and what stage it is, chemotherapy may play an essential role in successfully treating it. That includes ovarian, uterine, vulvar and vaginal cancers.

Using a combination of specialized medications, chemotherapy can destroy or slow down the growth of cancer cells in every part of your body. It can be administered intravenously, orally or by injection.

Your oncology team will determine which medication or combination of medications makes the most sense for you. Chemotherapy may be the only treatment you receive, or it may be used with surgery and/or radiation therapy.

Radiation Therapy

We use sophisticated radiation technology and can target tumors in and around your cervix, vagina, ovaries and uterus with amazing precision. Depending on your diagnosis, your dedicated team may recommend radiation alone, but in many cases, we combine it with surgery and chemotherapy.

Radiation therapy targets specific areas, shrinking tumors and killing cancer cells by damaging their DNA.

When treating gynecologic cancer, radiation therapy may be delivered externally or internally. External radiation delivers radiation in a concentrated beam to keep nearby healthy tissue unaffected. Internal radiation is guided by ultrasound or is done through MRI-guided HDR brachytherapy, a minimally invasive method.

Surgical Options

Our gynecologic oncology care is designed for your healing. With a wide variety of treatments and procedures, we’re here to help you feel whole again. Our gynecologic oncologists have specialized training in a wide range of surgical approaches, from minimally invasive approaches to open surgery.

Signs You Need Care

Some factors that lead to gynecologic cancer can’t be changed, like your family history or if you have a weakened immune system. But lifestyle choices like diet and exercise can increase or decrease the odds of you developing the disease.

You know your health better than anyone. That’s why it’s important to be on the lookout for signs and symptoms of gynecologic cancer, like:

  • Abdominal or back pain
  • Abnormal bleeding or discharge
  • Changes in the color of the skin
  • Difficulty eating or feeling full too quickly
  • Frequent need to go to the bathroom
  • Itching or burning sensation
  • Pelvic pain or pressure
  • Unexplained bloating
Testing

We work to identify cancer early so we can destroy the existing illness and prevent it from spreading. In a well-woman exam, our OB/GYNs perform a yearly check-up, which includes a pelvic exam that helps us look for abnormalities and potential indicators of cancer with a tissue sample analysis. Our team members are deeply aware of the sensitive nature of these exams, which is why we strive to provide an experience that’s as comfortable as possible.
