- Cancer Rehabilitation Program
-
People who’ve had cancer treatments can have side effects that make it difficult to enjoy everyday activities, such as:
- Fatigue
- Neuromuscular deficits
- Osteoporosis
- Pain
- Weight gain
Our physical therapists will work closely with you to evaluate your strength, balance, fatigue and flexibility — before, during and after cancer treatments. Certified in cancer rehabilitation, our team members provide services tailored to your needs, and your plan may include a customized exercise program to meet your goals.
- Lymphedema
-
Lymphedema is a common side effect after cancer treatment, and it’s caused by the removal or damage to your lymph nodes. This damage can create a blockage in your lymphatic system and stops fluid from draining. The blockage can lead to swelling in the arms and legs.
Common symptoms of lymphedema include:
- A feeling of heaviness or tightness
- Aching or discomfort
- Fibrosis (hardening and thickening of the skin)
- Limited range of motion
- Recurring infections
- Swelling in the arms and legs
While there’s no cure for lymphedema, it can be effectively managed with several treatments, including targeted physical therapy.
AdventHealth Cancer Institute Shawnee Mission offers lymphedema therapy by licensed occupational therapists with extensive experience in managing lymphatic disorders in patients undergoing cancer treatments.
This knowledge helps us create a path to whole health that may include:
- Compression bandages
- Education and support
- Exercises to increase flexibility and range of motion
- Light massage
