Sedation Procedures
Sedation procedures involve the administration of medications that cause the patient to be drowsy and relaxed during a minor medical procedure such as endoscopy, oral surgery or diagnostic testing. Depending on the procedure to be performed and the patient’s preferences, different levels of sedation can be achieved ranging from minimal to moderate or deep sedation. However, even “deep” sedation differs from general anesthesia, which induces sleep from which the patient cannot be roused for a period of time and is used for longer and more invasive surgeries. Sedation is generally administered via IV or oral medication. “Conscious sedation” is often used in outpatient procedures to minimize any anxiety and help your child remain still so that treatment or imaging can take place.
POPS Unit
Thanks to a gift from SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment, AdventHealth for Children’s Pediatric Outpatient Procedures and Sedation unit (POPS) opened its doors in September 2015 with the goal of providing a lower-cost and more easily accessible location for kids to receive lifesaving treatments ranging from chemotherapy to transfusion. Colorful, undersea-themed wall murals appear throughout the reception area and hallways of the POPS unit to help children feel more at ease during their treatment. Other key features include a virtual aquarium in the waiting area, and playful flooring and seating. The gift from SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment also includes an undersea video for patients to view through 3D goggles while undergoing MRI scans.
The POPS unit was designed to provide a more relaxing clinical environment to ease anxiety and stress for some of our youngest and sickest patients. Your child may need to visit us for one or more of the following services:
- Lab Draws Chemotherapy
- Endocrine Testing
- Transfusions
- Infusion Therapy
- Sedation
For more information, please call the POPS unit at Call407-303-5600.

Sedation and anesthesia are widely used by most health care providers worldwide, and they are both generally safe and effective. However, our team at AdventHealth for Children understands the potential risks associated with these procedures. We take many steps to ensure that only the children who truly require sedation or anesthesia receive it.
We offer other strategies to help your child feel comfortable and confident with imaging, such as:
- Child life specialists to answer questions and ease concerns
- Pretend-play with toy MRI machines
- Cinema Vision goggles that allow kids to watch movies during the exam
Your child’s care team will discuss sedation options. As always, please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
