Caring for Children with Pierre Robin Sequence/Pierre Robin Syndrome
At AdventHealth for Children, we also specialize in caring for a rare congenital disorder called Pierre Robin sequence/syndrome. Affecting about 1 in 20,000 newborns worldwide, it involves an abnormally small lower jaw and a tongue that tends to fall backward and block a child’s airway. In a sequence, one feature sets off a series of other changes as a baby grows early in pregnancy. This can lead to problems with breathing and feeding.
Some children with Pierre Robin syndrome/sequence experience breathing issues in their first months of life while others develop problems later. Many also have a cleft palate causing a gap in the roof of their mouth.
While the exact cause of Pierre Robin sequence is unknown for many children, we suspect changes in genes or chromosomes may play a role.
Our physicians can diagnose Pierre Robin sequence at birth. Your child’s doctor will check for other differences to determine if your child has Pierre Robin sequence as part of a genetic syndrome. About 20% to 30% of babies with Pierre Robin sequence have Stickler syndrome, a condition that can affect the eyes, hearing and joints.
Since Pierre Robin sequence can affect breathing, feeding, hearing, speech, and jaw and tooth development, our multidisciplinary team will work together with you to create a comprehensive care plan that meets the specific needs of your child.
