The role of a pediatric intensivist is to care for seriously ill infants and children who require close monitoring in the hospital’s pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). In some cases, these specialized pediatric doctors oversee the care of chronically ill children and certain sedation procedures. Pediatric intensivists are certified by the American Board of Pediatrics’ Sub-board of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. All pediatric intensivists must complete a three-year pediatric critical care medicine fellowship program upon completion of their pediatric residency.
At AdventHealth for Children, our intensive care/hospitalist team works closely with your child’s primary care physician as well as other specialists in the hospital in a highly collaborative environment that crosses into 30 different specialties. This allows us to provide comprehensive care that takes advantage of the tremendous knowledge base our medical team has so that your child receives the best possible care through every step of their treatment.

A PICU That’s Pretty Exceptional
Children who come to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at AdventHealth for Children often have significant breathing problems, heart defects, complications from diabetes or injuries sustained in a serious accident. Our PICU caregivers are trained to deal specifically with these critical cases.
We feel it is vital to your child’s health and healing that you are at the center of their in-hospital care. Our physicians, nurses and support staff all practice a family-centered approach and will be more than happy to answer your questions as they arise. You’ll also have ready access to the hospital’s chaplain, social workers and counselors during your child’s stay to help you with the psychological and emotional aspects of illness or injury. Rest assured, you are never alone when your child is here. Though the setting is decidedly high-tech, the care your child receives is extremely traditional – with friendly, capable nurses and knowledgeable, trusted physicians who genuinely care about your child’s health and overall wellbeing.

The Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU) at AdventHealth for Children one of the few units of its kind in the country. Equipped with the latest monitoring and intervention equipment and staffed by a multidisciplinary team, the PCICU can provide your child with highly specialized care before and after a heart procedure.
The unit offers innovative therapies and a computerized data collection and management system that ensures your child is monitored closely and receives superior care around the clock. Here, kids who are seriously ill with heart problems or who have recently undergone cardiac surgery benefit from coordinated treatment plans along with a focus on pain management and keeping families thoroughly informed about their loved one’s status.
