Karleena initially didn't realize that Clay County had an endocrinology department until her family doctor, Dr. Naval with AdventHealth Primary Care Clinic, referred her to April Couch, APRN, with the endocrinology team at AdventHealth Primary Care Clinic. Karleena's visit with April was for diabetes management and to get an insulin pump. However, during the exam, April mentioned Cushing's disease, a condition Karleena had never heard of. After running several tests, Karleena was diagnosed with Cushing's disease, which explained her difficulties in managing diabetes.
Karleena started medication for Cushing's disease and saw improvements in her blood sugar levels. Her blood sugar, which normally was in the 240s, came down to around 157. Karleena credits the coordinated care she received from her medical team, including April Couch, APRN, Dr. Escalante, an endocrinology physician at AdventHealth Primary Care Clinic, and Derrik Herron, Pharm.D., for her progress. She feels fortunate to have a team that communicates effectively and provides world-class treatment.
Karleena shared her thoughts on her journey: "I feel incredibly fortunate to have such a dedicated and knowledgeable medical team. Their coordinated care has made a significant difference in my health, and I am grateful for the personalized attention I receive. It's comforting to know that I can stay close to home and still receive the same quality of care that is available in larger cities."
Karleena's experience highlights the importance of having a personalized approach to healthcare. She appreciates the whole person care she receives in her small town, allowing her to receive quality care close to home. Karleena's story is a testament to the power of teamwork and the positive impact it can have on a patient's health journey.
