Guiding Your Care Strengthening Your Steps with Leading Hematology Care
- Screenings and Tests for Leukemia
-
You want to feel whole, and we want to help. When troubling signs or symptoms prompt you to seek medical help, you can count on the cancer centers at AdventHealth Tampa to provide a range of diagnostic procedures. After reviewing your medical history and performing a physical examination, we may perform one of several screenings or tests to determine whether you have a hematology condition.
- In bone marrow aspirations and biopsies, we take a small sample from your bone marrow and examine the number, size, and maturity of normal and abnormal blood cells in the sample.
- In complete blood counts (CBCs), we measure the size, number, and maturity of different blood cells in a specific amount of your blood. We may perform additional blood tests such as blood chemistries, genetic studies, and evaluations of liver and kidney functions.
- In CT scans, MRIs, X-rays, and ultrasounds, we use imaging and computer technology to view detailed images of your body, looking at the internal organs, tissues, and blood flow.
- In lymph node biopsies, we remove tissue or cells from one of your lymph nodes and examine the sample under a microscope.
- In spinal taps or lumbar punctures, we measure the pressure in your spinal canal and brain by placing a small needle in the lower back. We may also remove a small amount of fluid from around the brain and spinal cord to test for infection.
When you know the facts, you can move forward with more confidence. We know you’re eager to start feeling better, so we’ll try to give you your results as soon as possible. Then our hematology oncologists will patiently answer your questions, address your concerns, and discuss the next steps.
