Wholeness Through Expert Gynecologic Care
Managing period pain and other pelvic conditions can sometimes feel like a full-time job. It’s all-consuming and takes a toll on more than just your body. But at AdventHealth Tampa, you’ll find compassionate care for your whole person — your physical needs, but also care for your mind and spirit.
Whether you’re dealing with uterine fibroids, endometriosis or unexplained pelvic pain, we understand it can be hard to talk about or know how to find relief. But our experienced, highly skilled gynecologic surgeons have answers. We offer minimally invasive, robotic-assisted surgery for various gynecologic needs, including hysterectomies using the da Vinci® surgical system, which helps reduce recovery time, hospital stays and scarring.
We’re here to help you find the right gynecologist at a location that’s convenient for you.
Benefits of Robotic-Assisted Surgery
When possible, the least invasive surgical procedure is the best option. Minimally invasive, robotic-assisted surgery has many benefits, including less pain, smaller incisions, fewer complications, shorter hospital stays and a faster recovery.
We use leading-edge equipment like the da Vinci® surgical system and other robotic-assisted surgical technology to treat a range of gynecologic conditions.
In some cases, our surgeons offer single-site robotic-assisted surgeries. With all the benefits of traditional minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery, this approach requires only one incision — through the belly button — which means little to no scarring.
Single-site robotic-assisted surgery is offered for a variety of gynecologic procedures, including:
- Hysterectomy
- Tubal reversal
- Removal of benign uterine fibroids
- Removal of endometriosis
- Repair of pelvic organ prolapse
- Repair of pelvic organ prolapse with uterine preservation
Minimally Invasive Treatments for Gynecologic Conditions
- Heavy Menstrual Bleeding
-
Heavy menstrual bleeding, a common condition we treat at AdventHealth Tampa, is when a menstrual period lasts longer than seven days or a period that requires you to change your pad or tampon more frequently than every two hours.
We treat heavy menstrual bleeding with a surgical procedure called endometrial ablation. This minimally invasive treatment is offered under general anesthesia and is a same-day procedure that doesn't need a hospital stay. To perform an ablation, your gynecologic surgeon inserts slender instruments through the vagina and into the uterus to gently ablate, or destroy, the uterine lining, also known as the endometrium. Generally, patients will experience little to no pain or downtime. - Hysterectomy
-
Our surgical experts offer single-site, robotic-assisted hysterectomies using one small incision in the belly button. With all the benefits of minimally invasive, robotic-assisted surgery, you can expect virtually no scars, minimal pain and fast recovery as compared to traditional vaginal hysterectomies.
- Uterine Fibroids
-
Often, during a woman’s childbearing years, noncancerous uterine growths known as fibroids can develop. Common symptoms of these growths include heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, frequent urination, infertility and miscarriage.
A myomectomy to remove the fibroids may be recommended if symptoms interfere with your day-to-day life. Or if you’re trying to become pregnant and the fibroids may be affecting fertility or contributing to recurrent miscarriage.
Our women’s surgery experts at AdventHealth Tampa offer minimally invasive, robotic-assisted myomectomy procedures to remove uterine fibroids.
- Endometriosis
-
For decades, endometriosis was treated with surgical thermal or laser ablation. However, experts now consider excision surgery to be the superior treatment for advanced endometriosis.
Excision surgery for endometriosis aims to remove all implants of the disease, leaving only healthy, unscarred tissue. Traditional ablation surgery only eliminated lesions at the surface, often resulting in recurring pain in six to 12 months.
Our expert surgeons follow the gold standard approach of excision surgery because it removes both active surface lesions and the scarred tissue below, leading to much better patient outcomes.
- Pelvic Pain
-
Pelvic pain in women is more common than many people realize. We identify and treat the unique causes of your pelvic pain.
As women age, the muscles in the pelvis become looser. A weak pelvic floor can cause many issues and conditions, including incontinence, frequent or painful urination, fistulas, organ or bladder prolapse or urethral issues.
Whatever your diagnosis, our minimally invasive approach to gynecologic surgery will help you find the answers you need.
- Urinary Incontinence
-
It’s important to know how common pelvic floor issues are and that relief is possible. Whether you suffer from an overactive bladder or urinary incontinence, the pelvic floor experts at AdventHealth Tampa are here to help you find relief and gain control so you can get back to living life confidently.
Incontinence is a common issue and ranges from occasionally leaking urine when you cough or sneeze (known as stress incontinence) to having the sudden and overwhelming urge to urinate that you cannot make it to the bathroom in time (known as urge incontinence).
When conservative treatments such as behavioral therapies, lifestyle modifications and pelvic floor physical therapy fail to resolve the issue, our experts offer surgery treatment options, including:
- Sling Procedures – a mesh sling is placed to support the urethra and the neck of the bladder to reduce urinary incontinence
- Prolapse Surgery – surgical mesh is used to lift and secure the pelvic organs back into place to restore proper bladder function
- Tubal Ligation and Reversal
-
If you've completed your family or have otherwise decided on permanent birth control, we offer minimally invasive tubal ligation. Commonly known as getting your tubes tied, this same-day procedure is an effective, non-hormonal option for birth control.
Tubal ligation is permanent, but there may be the option to reverse it, depending on the process used in the original procedure. Our gynecologic surgeons can give you more insight into the possibility of undoing a previous ligation.
- Pelvic Organ Prolapse
-
Affecting one in nine women, pelvic organ prolapse is a common problem and occurs when the natural position of pelvic organs slides into or outside of the vaginal canal.
Generally, weak pelvic floor muscles and connective tissues cause the condition.
Other causes include:
- Genetics
- Hysterectomy
- Increase in abdominal pressure (due to coughing, constipation or heavy exertion at work)
- Obesity
- Smoking
- Vaginal birth
Prolapse symptoms — vaginal bulging, pressure or heaviness that is only relieved by lying down — can cause mild discomfort or are sometimes debilitating.
Sacrocolpopexy is a robotic-assisted surgical procedure used to treat moderate to severe pelvic organ prolapse. Using the da Vinci® surgical system, this minimally invasive procedure uses a surgical mesh to lift and secure the pelvic organs back into place.
