What to Know About Patient Transfers
- When a Transfer is Necessary
-
Transferring a patient from one hospital to another is common to provide the highest level of expertise and care for their specific medical condition. While every patient is unique, some of the most common conditions that require a transfer to another hospital include:
- Cardiovascular surgery, including after a heart attack
- Gastrointestinal surgery
- Neonatal intensive care
- Neurological conditions, including stroke
- Obstetrics, including for high-risk pregnancies
- Oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMF)
- Orthopedic surgery
- Otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat) surgery
- Pediatric intensive care
- What to Expect During the Transfer
-
We want to make your hospital transfer as seamless as possible. The transfer is orchestrated by trained medical professionals who understand your condition and are dedicated to ensuring you get the best possible care.
You will be taken by ambulance or air transport to AdventHealth Tampa by a team of caring and skilled medical professionals. If you would like a family member to accompany you, please ask your physician when you are discharged. Once you arrive at AdventHealth Tampa, a team of specialists will be ready to care for you.
Your new physician and care team will evaluate you and determine whether you can benefit from a diagnostic, interventional or surgical procedure. Or, they may monitor you to determine what additional treatment may be needed to help your condition.
Every patient is unique, requiring a different level and type of specialized care. In some cases, patients may not be able to receive specialized treatment due to factors like their age, the severity of their illness, the potential risk associated with the treatment of other health problems. The physician will provide a full explanation and care plan upon evaluation.
- Seamless Transfer of Your Medical Record
-
When you transfer to AdventHealth Tampa from another AdventHealth facility, your medical records will seamlessly transfer along with you. This includes items such as:
- Your medical history, including medications you may have been given
- Any lab work that has been completed
- Any imaging tests that have been completed, such as an X-ray, computed tomography (CT) scan, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Any other medical or diagnostic tests
Having all of your medical records in one place and easily accessible means that we will have a full picture of your medical history available before your arrival. This will allow our experts to have a care plan in place to care for you quickly.
