A Team Approach
Based on your child’s particular needs, and to ensure the best outcomes possible, pediatric neurology and neurosurgery treatments may be part of a multidisciplinary approach that also includes care in craniofacial, plagiocephaly, neuro-oncology, neurofibromatosis or one of our other specialty programs.
In Pediatric Neurosurgery Elite Surgical Care Leverages the Latest Technology
Our team focuses on minimally invasive approaches and precision neurosurgery to ensure the best outcomes possible. We utilize cutting-edge surgical techniques to target brain pathology and tumors. When appropriate we use state-of-the-art techniques like:
- Intraoperative MRI and CT: powerful tools aiding the removal of brain lesions, which make the procedure safer and improve outcomes
- Neuro-navigation (“GPS”): computer-assisted technology to guide the surgeon
- Intraoperative neuromonitoring for real-time feedback of the function of nerves, brain and spinal cord
- Robotic and Laser assist surgery: Reduced risk of brain trauma and side effects
- Endoscopic brain surgery: allowing for faster recovery and reduced hospital stay

Elite Surgical Care With the Latest Technology
- 3T Magnetic Resonance Imaging (3T MRI)
-
An advanced imaging procedure, 3T MRI uses large magnets and radio waves to create a detailed image of the inside of your body. The 3T MRI produces a higher-definition picture than conventional 1.5T MRI technology, which helps with evaluation and diagnosis of tumors, lesions, physiological processes and more.
This painless test usually takes about an hour to complete and requires the patient to lie still while the scanning is in process. For people who've had seizures, 3T MRI can be particularly helpful for locating the origin of the brain in which the seizures are generated. These tests can help our teams pinpoint where irregularities in the brain and other parts of the body occur, so they can better help each person.
- Magnetoencephalography (MEG) Brain Mapping
-
Magnetoencephalography, or MEG for short, is a non-invasive brain-mapping procedure that provides the most accurate picture possible of where and when brain activity occurs. This procedure can track moment-to-moment brain activity at the millisecond level or better, which allows doctors to pinpoint the areas of the brain where abnormal activity in epileptic disorders happens.
We know that MEG technology is completely safe, which is particularly important for routine clinical evaluations of young children. This technology is already helping our doctors treat people who have epilepsy and brain tumors, and is opening new doors for research in neurodevelopmental disorders, stroke, brain trauma, brain plasticity, aging and memory.
- Robotic Stereotactic Assistance (ROSA)
-
A robotic surgical assistant, ROSA helps increase the reliability and safety of various neurosurgical procedures. This technology helps our surgeons perform minimally invasive brain surgery for epilepsy and other neurologic conditions in a safer, faster and more effective way. It does so in three ways: by using image guidance, by providing a stereotactic device that holds surgical tools and by allowing procedures with image guidance to be done robotically.
