- Education That Prepares You for Surgery

We know that if surgery is part of your care plan, you probably have a lot of questions. We’re here to answer them and prepare you as much as possible, so you can feel informed and confident.
When your surgeon schedules a procedure, we’ll invite you to a one-hour, small-group session. You and your support person will receive educational materials and have a chance to ask questions.
Topics may include:
- Exercises for muscle strength
- Family support and amenities
- How to ensure a smooth recovery
- Preparing your body, home and mind
- What to expect at the hospital
- Your role in surgery and the recovery process
You’ll also be able to speak with your surgeon and anesthesiologist before your procedure.
- Pain Management and Follow-Up Care

We’re here to make sure you experience as little pain as possible during and after your orthopedics procedure. We’ll first have you meet with your anesthesiologist, who will discuss pain management options and find the one that’s best suited to you. Many patients who get joint replacement surgery receive either spinal anesthesia or general anesthesia.
After your surgery, you’ll be asked to rate your pain level. A big part of the recovery process is controlling surgical pain. We often use a mix of approaches for relieving pain, including a balance of activity and rest, elevating and icing the surgical site, massage and pain medications.
And when you’re ready to go home, we want you to feel empowered and supported. That’s why we’ll ask you to attend group therapy before you leave the hospital. You’ll also get written instructions for your at-home care and any follow-up appointments.

Our joint replacement patients benefit from ERAS® — our enhanced recovery after surgery program. It’s a patient-centered, evidence-based, multidisciplinary team approach that helps to reduce the patient’s surgical stress response, optimize their physiologic function and facilitate recovery. ERAS® care forms a pathway as the patient moves from home through the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative phases of surgery and back home again.

Joint replacements drastically improve the quality of life of many people in our community. The Denver volunteer organization Operation Walk is working to make this care available to people in developing countries and here at home. On each mission, Operation Walk doctors, physical therapists, nurses, anesthesiologists and surgery support teams perform dozens of joint replacement surgeries. They also provide education and training to medical teams in these often-remote villages, empowering them to treat patients independently.
