Images To Give You the Inside Story
When something’s going on inside your body, you want straightforward answers fast, and a computed tomography (CT) scan can help find them.
This non-invasive imaging procedure helps diagnose and treat medical conditions using high-tech computer systems and X-rays — producing clearer images and revealing more detail than X-rays alone. And during this scan, your comfort is our priority: CT scans are painless, and the scanners aren’t confining, giving you greater peace of mind.
And with hospitals and imaging centers in Tampa Bay, Ocala and Polk, Highlands and Hardee county, AdventHealth has a location near you.
What To Expect During Your CT Scan
Before your scan begins, please inform the technologist if you have any allergies or if there's any possibility that you're pregnant.
With most CT scans, the technologist will start an intravenous (IV) line to administer a contrast agent. This safe substance highlights specific tissues and enables the finest details to show up, improving diagnostic accuracy. Some exams may require you to avoid food or liquids before the exam.
Some CT scans may require administering a contrast agent either orally or intravenously. You'll likely change into a gown and remove all jewelry before being positioned on a moveable exam table.
The scanner may make noise, but this is just the activation of the X-ray tube as it rotates around your body. The technologist may ask you to hold your breath during some portions of the exam.
If your CT scan included contrast, you may resume a normal diet following your exam, but drink plenty of fluids to flush the contrast from your system. If you had a scan with contrast and you take medication to manage diabetes, please ask your technologist when you can resume taking your medication.
Our imaging technologists will send the results from your CT scan to your ordering physician within 24 to 48 hours.
If you have any questions regarding your exam, please ask. We're here to support you and want to ensure all your questions and concerns are addressed so you can be comfortable and confident.
