Finding Answers With Clear Pictures
From identifying broken bone to discovering tumors, X-rays are important diagnostic tests to guide your provider in finding answers. Because when we have a clear picture of what’s happening inside, we can make a treatment plan that’ll work best for you. With hospitals and imaging centers in Tampa Bay, Ocala, Polk, Highlands and Hardee counties, we have services near you.
An X-ray is a two-dimensional image of the inside of your body. It’s a quick, effective tool to assist your doctor in diagnosing medical conditions. An X-ray machine sends an X-ray beam through your body, producing an image on a computerized detector.
Your doctor can also request a real-time X-ray (fluoroscopy), which produces a moving image of your body’s functioning organs, like your gastrointestinal or urinary tract.
What To Expect During Your X-Ray Exam
Before your X-ray, you’ll likely change into a gown (provided by our team) since clothing can disrupt the images. Most X-rays are relatively quick scans, but the exact time will vary based on the images and views ordered by your health care provider.
Fluoroscopy procedures may take longer than typical X-rays because the contrast agent has to be administered before the imaging begins. If you have a contrast allergy, please tell your referring physician before any procedure requiring a contrast. Some minimally invasive fluoroscopy procedures for spinal imaging may also require discontinuing blood thinner medications. Please discuss with your referring physician if a fluoroscopy is ordered for you.
For routine X-rays, you may be asked to stand, sit or lie on a table. You may also be asked to hold your breath for a short time. Following the directions of the technologist and radiologist are important to achieving the best images possible.
If there’s any chance you might be pregnant, please tell your doctor and the technologist before your exam.
Routine X-rays are quick and painless scans and shouldn’t require any recovery. Some fluoroscopy procedures may require some post-procedure instructions, which our team will provide for you.
Your imaging results will be shared with your health care provider so they can discuss them with you. You can also access your exam results by contacting the AdventHealth Medical Records office or creating an AdventHealth Account. This patient portal is a secure platform that houses your medical information, including imaging test results. You can also renew prescriptions and connect with your care team in your online patient account.
