Two Surgeons Prepare the Operating Room for a Procedure.

Imaging Procedures for Faster Recovery

Interventional radiology (IR) is a specialized area of radiology that diagnoses and treats patients using the least invasive techniques possible in order to minimize risk and improve outcomes. IR procedures have fewer risks and pain and a faster recovery time than open surgery.

IR procedures use X-ray, fluoroscopy, ultrasound and other imaging technologies to treat various medical conditions without surgery. IR might be the right fit if you need a procedure like a biopsy, inserting venous access devices, draining fluids or opening narrowed blood vessels.

And with hospitals and imaging centers in Tampa, Polk County, Ocala and the Heartland, we have locations near you.

What To Expect During Interventional Radiation

Before Your Exam

A nurse will call you the day before your procedure to review any preparations for your scheduled procedure. During this time, you should also arrange for an adult to be present for the post-procedure instructions, to take you home and to remain with you after immediate discharge. For your safety, your procedure may be canceled if these arrangements aren’t made.

On the day of your procedure, please arrive at least two hours before your appointment and bring a list of your current medications.

How Interventional Radiology Is Performed

You’ll be shown to our pre-procedural area, where you’ll change into a gown, and if needed, the clinical team will draw blood for lab work.

The procedure itself can vary widely depending on your needs. The interventional radiologist — and an anesthesiologist if sedation is required — will discuss the specifics of your procedure before getting started. An anesthesiologist will monitor your sedation throughout the entire procedure if sedation is needed.

After Your Exam

When your procedure is finished, you’ll be transported back to a recovery room. Exam times vary greatly, depending on the type of procedure.

A friend or family member must drive you home from the hospital on the day of your procedure after you’ve completed the recovery period. They do not have to stay during the exam, though. A phone number can be exchanged with the staff in our radiology recovery unit to contact them at the time of your discharge.

Results from the procedure will be sent to your ordering physician. You may also access your medical records online by creating an AdventHealth account.
