PGY 1

General Pediatrics Inpatient Days:

Schedule: 12-hour shifts (0730-1930); 6 days per week

Team members: Supervisory resident (PGY2 or PGY3), PGY1 Peds resident, Family Medicine residents, Faculty available 24/7 in house

Patients per resident: average 5-7 max 10 for rounds

Procedures: LP’s, IV’s, NG placement, Urine catheterizations

Patients Per Resident: Cap for admission is 8-10 per Intern; Anything over cap handled by faculty/senior resident

Description: Admissions to all non-ICU services

Newborn Nursery:

Schedule: 0700-1600; 6 days per week (No night shifts); Rotation occurs during the first 6 months of Intern Year

Team members: PGY1 Pediatric resident, Family Medicine and Resident, Newborn Faculty

Patients per residents: 10

Description: Healthy, term newborns

Procedures: circumcisions, attend newborn deliveries

NICU

Schedule: 0700-1700; 5 days per week with 2 NICU call days

Team members: Supervisory Resident (PGY3) with PGY1, Nurse Practitioner, Faculty

Patients per resident: 3-5

Description: ICU Level babies with a variety of conditions, attend deliveries of high risk, premature infants

Procedures: intubations, central line placement, LPs, ventilator management

Emergency Medicine:

Schedule: Average 19 shifts per 4-week block, mix of days, nights and weekends.

Location: Pediatric Emergency department at AdventHealth for Children or AdventHealth East Orlando, staffed by Board certified Pediatric Emergency Medicine physicians. Residents are on with faculty and NP who manages the Fast Track patients.

Procedures: suturing, LP, septic workups, IVs, blood draws, resuscitations, fracture care, sedations, foreign body removal

Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics:

Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00-5:00.

Location: DB Peds Outpatient Clinic. Evaluation and management of children with developmental disabilities, ADHD, and autism with a team of DB pediatricians and NPs.

Vulnerable Child

Schedule: Monday – Friday 0800-1700. One week in CCK clinic. Cross Cover 2 Saturdays during the block.

Team: Nurse practitioner from Kids House (local child abuse evaluation center), Faculty from clinic for Children with Special Healthcare Needs

Description: Residents will learn in depth about how children are evaluated for a variety of forms of abuse by our Child Protection Team. They will get to witness intake evaluations, obtaining history from children who have been abused both for sexual, physical and emotional abuse, as well as observe interdisciplinary meetings with law enforcement. In CCK clinic you will learn more about how we provide care coordination for Children with Special Healthcare Needs.

Acute Care:

Schedule: Monday – Friday 0800-1700. Cross cover weekends.

Team: PGY3 Supervisory resident and PGY1 resident, faculty at our outpatient General Pediatric Practice.

Description: During this block you will primarily be seeing acutely ill patients.

Procedures: foreign body removal, wart freezing, vaccine administration

Hematology/Oncology:

Schedule: Monday – Friday 0800-1700. Possibility of cross cover Weekend.

Team: Hematology and Oncology Faculty and Nurse Practitioners

Description: During this subspecialty block, you will experience both inpatient and outpatient Pediatric Heme/Onc, with opportunities to do inpatient consultations, attend LP’s, BM aspirations and interventional procedures.

Elective:

Schedule: varies depending on specialty; usually 0800-1700.

Pediatric Potpourri:

Schedule: Variable; Two weeks of inpatient coverage, One week of simulation and one week off for either Christmas or New Years.

Description: This is block 7 of our year, which encompasses the Holiday season. During this block, we pull our residents to primarily staff the inpatient units, which allows us to have a week of Simulation.

Description: During this rotation you will seeing Adolescents for a variety of illnesses, mental and reproductive health needs.

Community Pediatrics:

Schedule: Monday – Friday 0800-1700. Possibility of cross cover weekend.

Description: This is an experiential rotation designed to help residents learn about local resources such as special needs daycare, WIC clinic, Harvest Food Bank, experience budgeting for parents with new babies, and reflections on healthcare disparities.

Description: During this subspecialty block, you will experience both inpatient and outpatient Pediatric Cardiology, with opportunities to do inpatient consultations including CVICU rounds, attend catheterizations and interventional procedures.

Infectious Disease:

Schedule: Monday – Friday 0800-1700. Possibility of cross cover Weekend.

Team: Infectious Disease Faculty and Nurse Practitioners

Description: During this subspecialty block, under attending supervision, evaluate, examine, discuss, treat and follow hospitalized patients with infectious diseases, including, but not limited to, those with nosocomial infections, postoperative infections, sepsis, and infections in immunocompromised hosts, (e.g., patients with primary immunodeficiency syndromes, solid organ or stem cell transplant, conditions requiring immunosuppressive therapy, and HIV infection).
