A Clear Picture of Your Breast Health
As you get older, mammography becomes one of your most important routine screenings — and your insurance company is likely to cover the cost. If they don’t, national programs, community organizations and the AdventHealth Breast Cancer Care Fund offer discounts or even full funding. Having peace of mind doesn’t get any easier than this.
A mammogram is a noninvasive X-ray exam that gives us extraordinary insight into the state of your breast health, enabling us to detect breast cancer in the best way: early. You may wonder what age to get a mammogram. Depending on your health history and risk factors, we recommend women start getting screening mammograms between the ages of 40 and 50, unless your physician instructs you otherwise. If you’re age 25 or older and notice any unusual breast symptoms, you may require a diagnostic mammogram.
If you haven’t had a mammogram in the past year and you’re over age 40 with no abnormal symptoms, AdventHealth Imaging offers self-referred screening mammograms. Just come in for the screening, and have the results sent directly to you.
It’s all a part of our whole-person approach, designed to make preventive care easy and accessible.
In collaboration with AdventHealth Imaging, we use the most advanced type of digital mammography and computer-aided detection available. These produce images unparalleled in clarity and sharpness. If you have naturally dense breast tissue or the results of your screening mammogram require closer investigation, you may need a diagnostic mammogram. Our technology — which uses a breast-conforming “smart paddle” design for less discomfort — can immediately detect subtle differences between tissues, pinpointing areas of concern, like cancerous tissue, benign tumors, or cysts, well before anyone can detect them by touch.
Our breast imaging experts use computer-aided detection to read the resulting images, zeroing in on even the slightest abnormality, including asymmetries, irregular areas of increased density, and clusters of small calcium deposits. From there, your electronic images can be enhanced by technology, stored for future reference, or sent for your physician to review.
